Introduction to Econometrics 4th Edition

I was looking for an econometric introduction textbook for my son who is an engineering major. My son just finished his freshman year and his math background includes: AP statistics, Calculus BC, multi-variable calculus, linear algebra and ordinary differential equation. Although he had complained about statistics being hard to grasp, he is going through this book and doing most of the exercises with minimum help from me.In contrast, I had a hard time with, An introduction to Classical Econometric Theory; by Paul A Ruud, as my first econometric reading. I think this book not only makes econometrics understandable and it also presents many practical techniques for situations that we often encounter.

If you want to understand econometric in a short time, read this easy to understand book. It explains the fundamentals well with plenty of examples. The layout helps readers understand its content fast. It also covers enough scope for a one semester course.

There are some tags and notes on it, very easy for reading and finding information, though it is an old one, better and cheaper than the new one!

I do economic research and occasionally have to engage in econometric modeling. I bought this text because a professor I know uses it in his graduate statistics and econometrics classes. The text begins at the basic level of developing an economic study, determining the statistical methods to apply, and then the econometric methods to be used. It is rather unique in its range of coverage. However, it packs in too much information in too little a package, thus providing more of an overview than an in-depth coverage. To gain anything from this text, one needs to be in an econometrics class with an instructor to fill in the details. I think the introductory text by Kennedy is superior to this one.

The book (4th edition) covers a large amount of introductory econometrics, it's written clearly and has several examples. Surely serves the purpose of a good undergrad econometric textbook but lacks depth and falls short of advanced methods.

I hate this book! If I did not have to use this book for my class I would never have bought it.

AMAZING book for beginners Econometrics. I bought this for my Econometrics module at Uni. I just wish i had been reading it at the same tie as doing notes as my coursework would have all been 100% throughout. The explanations are really that good! I still got a 1st in coursework, and then managed to also get a first in the exam thanks to this book! The pages are easy to read (much easier than the earlier editions that are full of text and all black and white!), so i would definitely recommend this edition and paying a bit extra. This made it so much easier for me to stay motivated. Econometrics is a hard subject, but with this book you can easily get a first if you study it all carefully. I just wrote notes on all the relevant chapters and then did past papers from my notes. I hadn't looked at the textbook at all until come exam time (which i wish i had done!), so I literally spent all day everyday in the library writing notes for a week, which shows how good the book is. Doing the review exercises would probably help a lot too but I didn't have time. Cannot stress enough that this book is the reason I got a first in the exam. My coursework was great but i found it really difficult to do well without notes, until I read through all of this and understood the concepts a lot better.

Well if you're second year economic then you don't have a choice!! Just buy the dam book... I found it easy to follow but it's definitely not something you'll read once. Also all the lecture PowerPoint have been done by theses people, so if your teacher is bad rest reassure you have the material online. You actually don't need a book for that just Google "oup Dougherty " , the study guide on there was very handy for my exam, but unfortunately I didn't know it was there until some weeks to the exam! It has some exercise and answers to star questions.
