Review: I find the square strike 45 degree wedge to be much more forgiving and consistent as a chipping wedge than my previous pitching wedge, and still serves as a fine pitching wedge from further out. As someone who took up golf later in life and is a fairly high handicapper, I'm looking to build a club set that is forgiving, yet affordable, especially for the short game. While no miracle club, I do find the square wedge 45 chips much easier and more consistently, especially on shorter swings, where my lighter club often got hung up. The club weight is very conducive to a putt-like, smooth and consistent swing. I'm definitely on target more often with this club. The bounce not only helps prevent the consequences of fat shots and getting hung up, but because I'm not so worried about fat shots, I'm also much less likely to skull the ball. Since I wasn't too disappointed with my current pitching wedge, I started with the square wedge 55 first which was a mistake. I should have started with the 45 and developed comfort with it before purchasing the 55. However, I have no regrets about either. The company and many reviews focus on this clubs as a chipper around the green and that is indeed where this club shines. However, I think it's important to note, it's a perfectly fine pitching wedge and is my go to club from 90 yards or so and in. (I don't hit this quite as far as my previous pitching wedge, but since this is mostly for less than full distance, that doesn't really matter.) I watched a number of video reviews done by very experienced golfers who gave some criticism to this club for it's lack of versatility. True, this isn't a club you are going to open way up and do ultra high lob shots with or work the ball with. However, that's not what it's designed for. It's designed to be forgiving and provide consistency to the game for amateur golfers and I feel it does that very, very well. As with any new club, it does take some getting used to. Obviously this club won't magically compensate for distance, slope, green speed, break etc. That unfortunately still requires a lot of practice. One way I do get more versatility out of this club for chipping is to have 3 places in my stance for the ball, which effectively gives the club three different lofts. (I only use the forward position, hitting out of the rough on very short shots, so the angle of the bounce along the ground isn't an issue) What I also like is that Square Strike now makes some irons that are of similar design. While I don't think those are game changers as much as this club is, it means one can have a set of wedges and irons that are a complimentary set with similar characteristics and an appropriate loft variance between them. I feel this is great for amateurs such as myself who want to bring as much consistency to the game as possible. I've purchased a few new clubs this year, all of which I like, but this is the only one I can say is without a doubt a game changer for me.

**Q: “What’s the difference between the Square Strike Wedge and just using my 7 or 8 iron for chipping?”**
A: Good question. That's actually one we get a lot. The answer is that the Square Strike Wedge is simply a more effective chipping wedge or pitching wedge than a 7-iron – or any other traditional iron. Here’s what the SSW has that those clubs don’t:

1. Shorter length (35.5” vs. a 7-iron at ~37”). It’s easier to control and you don’t have to grip down on the club.

2. The lie angle of a putter (68°), which is 5-6 degrees more upright than a 7-iron. This puts you closer to the ball and promotes a simple, straight-back-and-through, pendulum-style motion for greater control and consistency.

3. A heavier clubhead, which engages your arms and shoulders in a putting-stroke type motion while minimizing hand and wrist action. Amateurs using lighter traditional clubs tend to overuse their hands/wrists and flick the club at the ball, which causes fat and thin shots.

4. Extra weight toward the toe, so the clubhead stays square rather than rotating sharply through impact. Golfers rave about how accurate (on-line) their shots are with the Square Strike Wedge.

5. An extra-wide sole and beveled leading edge, which keeps the Square Strike from digging into the turf (causing fat shots) or snagging in the grass. Traditional irons have much thinner, sharper soles and leading edges.

6. More loft for greater versatility. There’s a misperception that the Square Strike Wedge has the loft of a 7- or 8-iron. Actually, its 45° loft is 12 – 15 degrees more than a 7-iron, so you can play a wide variety of shots (not just low runners).

**Q: Is it legal?**
A: Yes, the Square Strike Wedge conforms to the rules of golf, so it is legal and can be used as a pitching wedge or chipping wedge in tournament play.

**Q: Can the 55 degree SSW be used out of a sand trap?**
A: I’ve used it out of a sand trap; several times. At 55*, its trajectory is not real high; but I’ve got out of a lipped bunker a couple of times. This 55* is probably best from 30 yards out, and on the fringe of the green. One of my favorite clubs, and I’m using TM Stealth irons, which are great.

**Q: I don't know which loft to choose.  Im a weekend golfer.  What do you suggest?**
A: The 45° is the featured loft which you see in most of our advertisements. It’s best from about 50 yards and in, on shots that you want to bump and run right at the target. The 55° and 60° will give you more loft availability for faster greens that you need to check up on, or shots where you need to carry a bunker. The 45° will easily replace whatever wedge you use most often for chipping and for short pitch shots, and you could swap your standard sand or lob wedge for the Square Strike 55° or 60°
