Sound Devices MixPre-3 Portable Multichannel Audio Recorder/Mixer, and USB Audio Interface

I have used several other audio recorders over the years, including the Zoom H4n and the Tascam DR60-D, and this one blows them all away. Amazing quality. Solid build. Almost zero noise floor. Simply amazing!

This recorder/mixer/preamps is amazing. It's small and light, easy to use, but most importantly, the sound quality is fantastic.I tried out the Zoom H6 but the Zoom's preamp were terrible, they were absolutely unusable, and the dials we're placed in such a way that could easily be moved by mistake. It also mounts on top of a camera or a cage, unlike the mixpre-3 which goes neatly underneath the camera and doesn't get in the way and you don't need a cage even with a mic with transmitters that could be mounted on a triple shoe bracket in the camera's hot shoe.The AA battery adapter is ridiculous to include with the MixPre3 because they last a few minutes. The l-battery adapter should be included with this device. I bought the l-battery adapter because I couldn't find a USB battery pack with a 1/4-20 screw hole that I can somehow attach it to my camera setup. I wasn't going to let the battery pack simple dangle... I didn't find the l-battery sled on Amazon so I bought it from B&H. I use an np-550 2600 mah battery in the top battery compartment of the adapter because it's not as high as a higher capacity np battery, so it won't stick out too much and hit the lens. On the bottom battery compartment I use a high capacity np-style battery which sticks out about two inches from the mixpre-3. It's not bad, but for the price the mixpre-3 should have a dedicated high capacity battery included and that doesn't stick out downward, only outward like the aa battery sled does.Also, the l-battery adapter is a piece of junky plastic that costed $65 when it's worth $15. This makes me wonder how much Sound Devices is overcharging for the devices they produce. Tascam recorders/preamps are between $200-$400. The reason I didn't buy a Tascam recorder is because the some reviews stated that Sound Devices recorders have better audio quality than Tascam and many people have problems because of the build of the Tascam recorders.The bottom line is that I really love the mixpre-3 but they need todesign and include a new sled and a low profile battery that gives more power and include it with the Mixpre-3.

I just wanted my sm7b to work and this did the trick. No cloud lifter, no added preamp, nothing but clean gain pushed to the max. I use it as an interface with two microphones now, and my windows 10 computer recognizes it well. It takes a bit of getting used to in order to set it up, but its nothing that there isnt plenty of info online (especially in the manual) . It gets warm to the touch during use but it has always preformed fine. The lcd screen is an extremely nice touch and I cannot imagine ever going back to an interface without one.

This is a very impressive mixer. It comes in a very compact size and is lightweight which makes it a perfect addition to my mirrorless camera setup. If you are going to invest in purchasing this product please make sure to invest in a portable charger. I purchased a 3.0 USB C 20100mAh portable charger which gives me hours of recording time on the Mixpre-3. Without the portable charger the AA battery life on these is extremely short. I believe the AA batteries are to be used as a backup and not the full source of power. The Mixpre works best with the additional battery/power accessories but my only issue is that I do not like the extra weight those accessories add to my setup. The portable charger works perfectly for me and keeps my setup lightweight.

Nice recorder, but eat battery really fast. Better to get an external source. But over looks very profesional y has several options for several types of use (i.e amateur and professional) . The fact that also works as USB interface is a great feature

The way the audio records and sometimes you can take it out to record. And to have a perfect audio you can match with Mogami cable and with the shotgun microphone sennheiser MKH416 And with this you can combine a perfect audio.

Use this for high quality sound for my film production.
