So I read Valerian root helps with PTSD and insomnia so I tried it. First, the smell is terrible! I had to explain to my husband that I didnt just rip one and walk out the kitchen - it's the valerian root. So don't leave the bottle open on the counter. The funk sticks to your fingers so wash the fingers you used right to pick up the pillow right after. It's best to lay down right after taking VR. I sometimes would stay up and still catch a second wind, then couldn't go to sleep at all. It gave me very trippy dreams. Most laughable, some scary. It's like it pulls them from the darkest places of your mind that you did or didn't know was there. Upon waking up I didn't feel groggy. Just a, "What the heck did I just dream" and then off I went. Didn't help me to overall calm down through the day or help my PTSD but I did get some sleep. For me I wouldn't by this again because I would need something stronger. However, I passed this on to my husband and he was able to sleep well just fine.

I was first introduced to valerian root to treat my 80-pound dog who suffers from extreme anxiety when we go on car rides and tries to climb under my legs while I'm driving. But then I realized I could benefit from taking it, too. I have a lot of stress, tension headaches, muscle spasms, anxiety, am a very light sleeper and I can't take prescription medications because of my job as a heavy machine operator. So I tried one capsule of valerian root before bed and felt like a million bucks in the morning! I felt sooooo rested is the best way I can describe it. I didn't feel groggy at all the next day. I have taken lorazepam in the past and valerian root doesn't give me the same noticeable calming effect, but rather it's more subtle. I took one capsule of valerian root one night when I started getting muscle spasms in my neck and shoulders and started getting a tension headache. After about an hour I realized my headache was gone. I'm not sure if that was a coincidence so I will keep treating any headaches I get and see if this continues. I gave one to my dog just before a 3.5 hour car trip and she did great. She stayed in the backseat the whole time and I could tell she was more calm and tired, closing her eyes several times and laying her head down. Once we got home she slept great. I will try this for a thunderstorm which she also has anxiety from and see if it helps her for that, too. Yes, the capsules smell like dirty gym socks. But if I take one out of the bottle and let it sit on the counter for a few minutes, the smell dissipates and the smell becomes less noticeable. And really, if these continue to help me the way they do, I could care less how it smells I will take them anyway. I wish there was more research on long-term usage because I can see myself taking these for a long time. I definitely recommend trying these if you think they can help you. I read several articles that what works for some may not work for others but it's worth a try!

I used to buy in store from another manufacturer, but their priced increased. So i decided to buy here. I thought valerian has that distinct smell. This one doesn't have that "awful smell," which means this is NOT potent. I'm still giving this product a chance by taking 2 a night. Not getting the best results. I'm just trying to use it rather than throwing :((
