HOT PEPPERS: When Wilbur Scoville first devised a means to test the heat of peppers, his hottest entry then came in at 20,000 units. Habanero and Thai chilies can go as high as 60,000. Compare that to the sweet bell pepper at zero. When hot peppers are consumed, capsaicinoids bind with pain receptors in the mouth and throat that are responsible for sensing heat. Once activated by the capsaicinoids, these receptors send a message to the brain that the person has consumed something hot. The brain responds to the burning sensation by raising the heart rate, increasing perspiration and release of endorphins. Hot peppers should be eaten with caution!Black Pearl Hot Pepper: 2006 AAS Winner. This first completely black-leafed pepper is a great choice for containers or planting in the garden. Foliage turns from greenish to glossy black with maturity, aided by the sun and heat. Very shiny black fruit matures dark red. Very, very hot! 14 to 18 inches high, spreading 12 to 16 inches. Grow as an ornamental, or in the vegetable garden, or both!

9 out of ten seeds germinated
I saw this plant last summer at Callaway gardens and was really excited by it. So I ordered some seeds this year from Hirt's. 9 out of 10 of these germintaed for me. Not sure why when I bought them a month ago they were $4 more than today. Oh well. Note that the seeds came in a ziplock bag, not a seed packet, and had a note saying to "Water with 1Tbsp potassium nitrate diluted in 1 gallon distilled water". Not sure if that was necessary, but I did order some potassium nitrate from ebay. My plants are now growing in seed medium on a heat mat - will transplant them outside in about a month.

but sprouted just fine in regular potting soil on a heating mat
I started them back in July. They took a couple weeks to germinate, but sprouted just fine in regular potting soil on a heating mat. I managed to kill several of the plants through neglect, but after a month the two survivors are eight inches tall and beginning to darken to their blackish color. They are already starting to flower and are doing quite well in pots on my windowsill.Edit: They never turned purple and the fruits were much larger and more round than black pearl peppers should be.

I Suggest Finding a Reputable Vendor...
I was able to grow four of the ten seeds. Some were lost due to my negligence. Came in ziploc style baggie labeled black Pearl capcasum or something like that. Plants are now 12" tall and closely resemble tomato plants. Green jagged leaves. If I they darken and smooth out like the plants SHOULD look, I will be stunned. More likely bait and switch.

Beautiful Plant
About 75 percent sprout rate. The two that I decided to plant out turned out to be incredibly healthy beautiful plants. Peppers aren't good for eating(they are hot but taste bad), but as a decorative plant it is striking. It's a 5 star for an ornamental, 1 star if you are growing for the peppers.

Sent wrong seeds.
Although a purple leaf pepper plant, the pepper growing is most definitely not a Black Pearl.

None of the seeds germinated, have been growing peppers many years and had placed in seed pods with dome on a plant heat pad.

My only disappointment was the germination
I was only able to get one seed to germinate. I did however get some peppers and they were larger than I expected. My only disappointment was the germination. I expected at least a 50% germination rate.
