Review: Book Review: Be Ready When the Luck Happens by Ina Garten - Ina Gartenโs memoir, Be Ready When the Luck Happens, is a delightful and candid exploration of her personal and professional journey. Known as the Barefoot Contessa, Garten opens up about her life with a mix of humor, wit, and vulnerability that fans will appreciate. The book chronicles her evolution from a nuclear energy analyst in Washington, D.C., to an iconic culinary figure, detailing the pivotal moments that shaped her career and personal life. One of the memoirโs strengths is Gartenโs ability to balance self-reflection with storytelling. She shares intimate details about her childhood, which was marked by strict expectations and emotional challenges and fueled by her desire for independence and creativity. Her bold decision to leave a stable government job and venture into a completely new field, buying a specialty food store in the Hamptons, despite having no culinary experience, is a testament to her audacious spirit and willingness to embrace change. Through anecdotes about her marriage to Jeffrey, their brief separation in the 1970s, and their enduring partnership, Garten paints a picture of mutual support and growth that adds depth to her narrative. The memoir also portrays Gartenโs passion for food as an expression of love and connection. Her philosophy of simplicity and quality in cooking resonates throughout the book, emphasizing how food can bring people together. Fans will enjoy her behind-the-scenes insights into creating cookbooks, hosting television shows, and even decorating her Paris apartmentโa testament to her meticulous attention to detail. However, the memoir does leave some gaps. While Garten touches on personal challenges such as her childhood struggles and marital dynamics, she does not delve deeply into topics like hormonal changes or how they may have impacted her quality of life. This omission feels like a missed opportunity to address an issue many professional women face but rarely discuss openly. Exploring how such personal factors influenced her career could have added another layer of relatability and depth to her story. Overall, Be Ready When the Luck Happens is an engaging and inspiring read that captivates the reader with Ina Gartenโs charm, resilience, and ability to turn challenges into opportunities. While it may leave readers wanting more on specific topics, it remains a testament to Gartenโs mantra: โDo what you love because if you love it, youโll be really good at it.โ Review: Beautifully written- made me love Ina Garten even more! - adventurous emotional funny informative inspiring reflective relaxing medium-paced 5.0 Reading Ina Garten, felt like watching her shows which I enjoy. A warm and charming memoir
I was familiar with Ina Garten and had seen her cooking show several times, but I only casually followed her. I read this memoir for book club and was pleasantly surprised. I found the narrative flowed very easily and gave me a solid idea of how Ina charted her life path out of a difficult childhood, then as a wife and an individual. Her voice comes through with warmth and charm, as if she is telling you her story over coffee. The life choices she and Jeffrey made are not conventional, but worked for them, and they were blessed to have the resources to carry them out for most of their life. Even though they built their own wealth, their experiences are not necessarily the same as those of the average person. As a reader, however, I still felt like I could relate to Ina and celebrate her successes. Some might consider her mentions of her celebrity friends and contacts as name-dropping, but that didn't bother me as these people became part of her world because of the life choices she made. Overall, this memoir is a very enjoyable and comfortable read.

A must read on how to live life on your OWN terms. Amazingly honest, warm, and inspirational.
Amazingly honest, warm, and inspirational. Ina opens up about her upbringing, self-doubt, relationship and business challenges, and of course food! A must read if you want to learn how to create a life on YOUR terms! Here are the top twelve inspirational insights I received from Ina's book: 1. Stay true to yourself and your vision instead of focusing on becoming a brand. 2. Swing for the fences. 3. Limit your liability. What's the worse that can happen? 4. Never, ever compromise on quality. 5. Don't get in your own way. Try it first. 6. Make sure you can get out of something if you don't like it, like her only committing to thirteen episodes. Things change. 7. As Jeffery says, "You never know your good breaks from your bad ones." 8. Challenges shape your success. 9. Find one person who believes in you. 10. As Oprah told her, "You werenโt lucky. You made your own luck.โ 11. Listen to other's advice, but follow your gut. 12. Have fun, eat well, and make time for friends. This is living well!

A Review of Be Ready When the luck Happens by Ina Garten
I loved this book. Ina Garten is an icon and her stories. Ina tells the story of how she started The Barefoot Contessa and how she met and fell in love with Jeffrey (her husband). If youโre looking for wonderful book this one is definitely worth purchasing. Itโs a memoir of timing (Ina was in the right place at the right time, love as she fell in love with and married Jeffrey and made a home for the two of them in Montauk

Breezy and Cheery
This is a very quick read for Ina Garten fans. I was constantly reminded of her catch phrase, how easy was that! It isn't that she totally avoids the dark moments, she speaks clearly but not at length about her miserable childhool with a repressed mother and a father who sometimes became violent. Or the time she insisted she and Jeffrey separate so she could find her authentic self. Which had something to do with the feminist movement and Gloria Steinem. This was several years after her impulsive buy of a specialty food store in the far off Hamptons, while Jeffrey continued to pursue his career in DC. And later in New York City or at Princeton or in far off places. Another 3 star reviewer mentioned that she never discusses how money has always been available in her life. Her father was an ENT surgeon, if I recall correctly, and Jeffrey has been amazingly successful. Here is a man who, wanting a break to consider his next career move, blithely states he would go teach at Columbia while thinking about it. Right! Somehow, Ina and Jeffrey always know the right people. Nevertheless, Ina did work very hard to make the Barefoot Contessa a success. She is an emotional, impulsive person with a surprisingly analytical approach to solving the problems in front of her nose. Problems that usually appeared after impulsive decisions were put into place. Apparently, she has always, and I mean always, had Jeffrey's support in whatever she wanted to do. Including a separation for a few months. The beginning of the book starts off with their being together almost all the time, and includes a fantastic camping trip through France and Switzerland which lasted four enchanted months. The book ends with the couple pursuing different lifes during the week, and supposedly rejoining on weekends. Although it is not clear to me if that means every weekend, most weekends, or once in a while. As time went on, they bought, renovated, and furnished an apartrment in Paris, the ultimate success symbol for a couple who started out with a tent! She has had a remarkable life. And a remarkable husband.

A Beautiful, Honest, and Inspiring Memoir
I absolutely loved this book. Iโve been watching Ina Garten since I was little, so getting a behind-the-scenes look at her life was such a treat. She shares stories from her childhood, how she met her husband, and even her career before stepping into the food world. I especially love the titleโBe Ready When the Luck Happensโbecause while she acknowledges the role of luck in her journey, she also emphasizes the importance of being prepared and following your instincts. One phrase she repeats throughout the book really stuck with me: "You donโt know your good breaks from your bad ones." Itโs such a thoughtful reflection on how things only make sense in hindsight. This book is honest, inspiring, and a beautiful reminder to take risks and follow your heart.

Great
A really interesting read about the life of one of my favourite tv cooks. A lot of information in the book that I wasnโt aware of, so I found it interesting and informative. I bought the paperback, which is 394 pages, decent sized font, a few black and white pictures, and an east read.

Amazing biography
What a treat to read this book by the incomparable @inagarten . I have watched Inaโs cooking shows for years and made countless dishes from her many cookbooks (her Mac and Cheese from Barefoot Contessa Family Style is a staple in our house) but I realize that I knew very little about her life outside of Barefoot Contessa. From her difficult childhood to her relationship with her husband Jeffrey, from her homes in the Hamptons and Paris to the many career decisions sheโs made, Ina shares little known tidbits and stories that demonstrate a life well and deliciously-lived. A must-read for any foodie but also an inspiration for independent and determined women, this biography was an absolute pleasure to devour. Special shout out about the included recipe for Outrageous Brownies - they are even more amazing than their name suggests! #barefootcontessa #inagarren #nonfiction #tackleyourTBR

Captivating memoir. Bravo from Paris!
An honest, moving, and down to earth autobiography of one of my favorite chefs, poignant, interesting and humbling. Very unpretentious, she shares the victories and challenges of her life, both personally and professionally and how she overcame them. She is truly a treasure both to watch and to read about in this book. Even if you hate cooking, you will love her story. But let the reader beware, after reading this you will be itching to go to France.
