(Andrew Roberts Evening Standard)"Her scholarship is considerable and yet she wears it lightly, producing a book which is always lively, entertaining and immensely readable." (Daily Express)"Natalie Livingstone has written an utterly fascinating and completely beguiling account of three centuries of high living, high politics, and high drama at one of Britain's most famous stately homes. A page turner from start to finish, The Mistresses of Cliveden perfectly illustrates why social history rules the shelves; it's history with all the good stuff left in." (Amanda Foreman, author of GEORGIANA, DUCHESS OF DEVONSHIRE)"A wonderful voyage through the fascinating history of Cliveden - this is a brilliant book full of gripping personalities and beautiful detail." (Kate Williams, author of BECOMING QUEEN and JOSEPHINE)"Wide-ranging and deliciously enjoyable..." (Juliet Nicholson The Telegraph)"Meticulously researched." (Mail on Sunday)"A fascinating journey through English social history, with Cliveden at its heart." (Country Life)"Fluently written, the book interweaves [these] personal stories with historical snippets illuminating each era and glimpses of life at the pinnacle of society… The broad sweep through 300 years of social change is packed with plenty of colourful details that capture the heady essence of Cliveden and the bold, spirited women who shared its history" (History Today) Book Description Sex, money, power, politics and property – the extraordinary story of how five women used their home to influence British society. I felt occasional confusion because of some poor syntax in parts, but it doesn't ruin the book though I had to reread a few passages in order to follow the story fully.I'm glad the author didn't make a big deal of the Profumo affair as, to me, that's a minor blip in a wonderful history of incredible women. We hear so often about the men who built these great houses so it is so refreshing to have a book that focuses on the women.I read it to coincide with a visit to Cliveden. It is a stunning stunning place! The gardens are the magic - the house is a bit of a hotchpotch of extensions and odd bits seemingly stuck on, but the terraces and gardens are incredible. Visiting it, having read the book, made it so much more magical as I could link what I'd read to what I could see.I found the first chapters of the book a bit slow and not all of it was relevant to Cliveden. In my view: the characters who founded Cliveden and so begin this story all seem to have been such selfish unlikeable, people, which perhaps added to my irritation. However, the stories of Augusta and Harriet, which follow and make up the bulk of the book, make the entire book worthwhile. Again, not all of it strictly relevant to Cliveden, but they're such incredible women that it doesn't matter! An extra bonus with this book is that it inspires you to read on about other fascinating women - Sarah Jennings, for example, and Queen Victoria. Again, both difficult women: however, the conflict between their arrogance and the loyalty they inspired in other women is made clear in this book and inspires further reading. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 50 shades of Who?! *by J***T on 22 July 2015* Makes 50 shades of Grey look like 50 shades of Puritan. If you're looking for mystique, glamour and a bit of naughtiness, look no further. Splendid read. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Five Stars *by J***Y on 14 July 2015* I finished the book in 2 days, a page turner that i couldn't put down. --- ## Why Shop on Desertcart? - 🛒 **Trusted by 1.3+ Million Shoppers** — Serving international shoppers since 2016 - 🌍 **Shop Globally** — Access 737+ million products across 21 categories - 💰 **No Hidden Fees** — All customs, duties, and taxes included in the price - 🔄 **15-Day Free Returns** — Hassle-free returns (30 days for PRO members) - 🔒 **Secure Payments** — Trusted payment options with buyer protection - ⭐ **TrustPilot Rated 4.5/5** — Based on 8,000+ happy customer reviews **Shop now:** [https://www.desertcart.jp/products/66447989-the-mistresses-of-cliveden-three-centuries-of-scandal-power-intrigue](https://www.desertcart.jp/products/66447989-the-mistresses-of-cliveden-three-centuries-of-scandal-power-intrigue) --- *Product available on Desertcart Japan* *Store origin: JP* *Last updated: 2026-11-08*
