Majohn P139#8 Medium Nib Fountain Pen with Box, Brass Piston System Large Capacity Writing Pen, Black Yellow

I have quite a few fountain pens, and this one is my favorite. The fit and finish are very well done, it looks great. And what you get for the cost is more than I expected. Like the cap and barrel threads being machined rather than molded. It has an Ebonite feed that can be heat set with some boiling water, there are many videos on how to do this I suggest watching some before you try it. It's a nice smooth writer and the nib has a cool design, which on mine was stamped in rather than laser etched like some of the nibs shown in the product pictures. I think this stamped version looks much better. The piston mechanism is all brass and operates very smoothly. In another review it was mentioned that the design was somehow flawed and caused issues, but after taking the pen apart I see no such issue and is actually very well made and works fine. Its design is similar to other piston fillers, only this one is all premium brass material. It should last forever, won't break when the piston sticks after sitting unused and it takes some pressure to get it moving, and gives the pen a good weighty expensive feel. Refilling is easy. Even the customer service from the seller was great. I wanted a spare piston and they made a listing and sent me one. Replacement nib assemblies are available to purchase as well. I always like to see replacement parts available for any product and being able to fix it is always a plus. My only gripe with it was the clip. The way the metal is folded around the back of the ball creates a pinch point that will pull fabric when you pull it out of your pocket. So with a toothpick I filled the small void at the end of the clip inside the ball with some JB Weld. It only took a few minutes. Any kind of thick glue would do I think. If you want to fix yours, to get the finial off it just unscrews, but it is tight so one of those rubber jar opener grip things helps. Added pics to show how it comes apart. Overall at least to me it's still a 5 star pen!

Beautiful pen. Writes smoothly, no feedback or scratchiness. Nice wet writer. Wonderful No. 8 nib <F>. Is a larger pen and very comfortable for long writing sessions. I love this piston filler as it holds a lot of ink. I do not write with it posted as I don't want to inadvertently disturb the piston knob. I have both the P139 and P140 and would buy them both again. One of my favorite pens.

This is a very well crafted pen that is a great writer and is a fantastic value. I’m a fan of the orange and black combo it just looks great. Ink flows well. One might call it slightly on the dry side but it is an EF nib so perhaps some adjusting can sort that out. It writes very smooth and is comfortable for long writing sessions

I have two of these pens. One in the gray marble, and the second orange and black that I bought here on Amazon. These are nicely made pens, and at a good price. A good fit and finish on all of the parts. They are BIG pens, a copy of a well known German brand's model 139 from before WWII. They made a limited edition with the orange design in the early 90s. All of the design elements are there. The pens are piston filled, so use bottled ink. Nibs are a #8 size, so bigger than most. The larger, longer nib balances the pen well, and it is a comfortable pen to use. The brass piston mechanism is sturdy and gives the pen a little heft. Nibs are replaceable. The hard rubber (ebonite) feed gives a good flow. The nibs were very smooth writing right out of the box. The nibs in both pens write wider than I would expect from a fine nib, and are wet writers. Some adjusting to limit the flow a bit was needed. The pen purchased through Amazon arrived in a simple gift box. The one thing that I do not like is the design of the clip. The clip is fine of a smooth fabric like broadcloth or oxford cloth. But they will grab and may damage any knit shirt when you try to remove it from your pocket. The reason is that the end of the clip is folded in to form a "ball," but it forms a V at the top that narrows down to a slit, and the fabric gets caught in it when I try to pull the pen out of my pocket. The attached picture shows a clip as it arrived, on top. You can see the tuft of fiber that it ripped off of the pocket on my shirt. The bottom clip shows my fix, which was to fill the V and the slit with solder, then blend, buff and gold plate. I've now done it with both. Perhaps filling with epoxy would work as well. The piston seal sticks on one of my pens. The seal is a soft material, and I don't think that silicone grease would be appropriate, and am not sure what to use just yet. The nib isn't tipped, so won't last as long as the German brand with the white star on top. Would I buy another? Well, I did as you can see. For $55 I consider it to be a good buy. Down a star because I assume that service will not be available if/when it fails. But that's the case for some very expensive pens too.

A Montblanc Hemmingway clone for under $60? What could go wrong? It looks great, even next to my Hemmingway, has a nice heft and is a smooth writer to boot. It's a bit big for daily use, but very impressive.

At first glance, this pen really impressed me. The size, the large nib, the material, the weight—everything looked and felt premium. I was genuinely excited to ink it up. Unfortunately, the writing experience was another story entirely. First issue: the piston mechanism. Out of the box, the piston was extremely stiff. I disassembled it and greased the rod, which helped, but that’s when I discovered a serious design flaw: the piston rod runs through a squared-off shaft instead of a cylindrical one. This creates unnecessary friction and makes the piston action rougher than it should be. Second issue: the nib and feed. The nib was very dry and skippy. I opened the tines a bit, which improved ink flow. I polished the tip to eliminate baby bottoming and opened the ink channels. That helped somewhat, but the flow still dies after a couple of lines. One more thing: the feed is not ebonite, even though it looks like it. It's a plastic feed designed to imitate ebonite, but it doesn’t behave like it. Proof? You can't heat-set it. That limits your options for further adjustment. At this point, I'm out of ideas. In general, I expect to tweak pens—even expensive gold nibs—but in this case, the problem feels baked into the design, especially the nib/feed unit. Unless you're experienced with nib tuning and willing to do significant troubleshooting, I can’t recommend this pen. If anyone has suggestions on how to improve the ink flow further, I’m open to ideas. I still want this pen to work. But for now, it’s staying dry in the drawer.

I have a collection of fountain pens. Have been building it for years. At this point, it’s mostly piston fillers. The Pelikan M200, M800 and M1000, the MB149 a pair of Lamy 2k, a Leonardo, Some pilots, Kaweco Etc. Like all of us I have some favorites and some I don’t prefer. This pen (and a cousin I will also review the 140) came highly recommended, not just in the budget pen category, but in general. In the $40 price bracket, I’m willing to experiment. So I ordered it. What are the specs? Piston fillers with an all brass piston mechanism, lovely resin body, attractive well executed (if entirely derivative of the montblac writers Hemingway) design and an ebonite feed. That’s right. Ebonite. Oh yes with a #8 steel nib. I like big nibs and in the pen community ebonite is sort of like a magical unicorn. All for $42 delivered. I was very curious but also very skeptical. The pen arrived, and I’m pleased to tell you that it actually exceeded my expectations by a huge margin. It’s inked so I can’t give you an empty mass. But it’s solid ( all the brass components) the finishing is excellent, the orange plastic is a bit flat. I’d prefer a bit more depth or chatoyance, but again 40USD. The level of detail, execution and mechanical operation were on par (better in some case, looking at you montblanc) than my prestige brand pens at 20 times the price. But how does it write? Some of my favourite writing pens ( Leonardo momento zero grabde 2) have a steel nib. But usually inexpensive steel nibs are a mixed bag. Scratchy., stiff, not expressive. In fairness, there are a lot of gold nibs that I don’t prefer either the 14 karat gold nib on the pilot custom 193 is one of my least favorite writers. It’s a mute, feels like you’re riding with someone else’s hand. This pen writes beautifully, the nib offers smooth writing with a light pencil like feedback. I’m not gonna confuse it with my M1000 but for a steel lip it’s surprisingly bouncy and expressive. It’s a lovely fast writer and with that ebonite feed the ink flow is consistent, generous and continuous. It’s overall a better writer so far than many of my other pens and out of the box it was more consistent than any of them. I found that my Mont Blanc and the big pelican took a substantial amount of adjustment to get their feed and nib dialed in correctly, disappointing on $1000 pen but the $40 moon man was writing perfectly out of the box. Aesthetically the nib is pretty humble looking gold toned steel with a laser engraved sun moon logo on the face, again you’re not gonna confuse it for the tricolour 18 karat on a pelikan or the 21 carat nib on a sailor but that’s OK too. It writes close to as well as both of them and more consistently than either. Aesthetically if there was a gold nib or even just a slightly better looking steel nib this pen would be absolutely world class. Pictured next to my pelican m 800 and with a small writing sample in dominant industries dominant blue 104. Hope this helps.

This has to be the best fountain value available. It’s a joy to write with. I’ve got a Mont Blanc 146 and the difference in writing pleasure is only slightly noticeable. Construction is substantial, it’s very well made. $58 vs $750 not even close.
