Great quality laptop for competitive price.
The laptop's been in work with me this week - running several benchmarks and a Direct X 9 3D screensaver. It came with a power supply, getting started booklet, and the box it's in! There's no money wasted on extras you might never use.I was worried when I first started it up - I got a Chinese message which I think might have said "Windows is starting for the first time - please wait".But when that message disappeared the first question asked was "Please select your language". It is Windows 10 - excellent! On selecting "English (UK)" with the arrow keys and Enter - the Cortana voice control system continued by asking me about Wifi settings, Windows login details and my location details. Finally Windows updates were downloaded and installed automatically and I was presented with the desktop.I had a couple of tec issues setting up some of my software for the PC, and the tec support was great - they got me to give them a remote-login username and password, and they had sorted me out in half an hour. The tec support I had was competent and fast - the Windows flashing on and off the screen. He'd soon finished, I thanked him, and he was off into cyberspace! The laptops fan-less, and uses "chip memory" which means it's entirely silent. Perfect for browsing at night and not disturbing anyone next to you.Even though it uses passive cooling - it's stayed cool even when it's been running at full performance with the CPU at full speed, and the 3D graphics display running. On the left and right sides of the laptop are located the plugs and sockets for peripherals. On both sides there's a single USB 3 socket (2 in total). On the left there's an additional Micro-HDMI socket (monitor out) and the newest style USB C socket. On the right there's a Micro SD card slot - which uses the "press to insert, and press to pop-out" type plug. As well as headphone jack (3.5mm) and power socket. (12v at 2 amps - positive center)The passive cooling works so well because the case is fully metal and wicks the heat away from the internal components. It's not metal coated plastic. It adds a little to the laptops weight, but it also gives the laptop a very solid feel - and nothing bends even slightly when picking the laptop up at one side. I've had some laptops click and squeek when I've held them horizontally on one end.I recommend using "Disk cleanup" when you get this laptop - the suppliers have kept the OS updated to keep the laptops at the cutting edge of Windows, but it means there's more than 10GB's of files in a backup folder called "Windows.old".To get rid of these unused files - run "Disk Cleanup", then click the "Clean up system files" button. Once it has run, you will see a NEW option in the list of clean up items "Old windows installation."Tick that, and click "OK". After a few minutes you'll have gained 10 to 20GB's of disk space! Awesome!I now have 21.1GB used, and 36.2GB free after all the Windows updates. Still plenty of space for several applications. You can get 128GB's of storage for £40 by getting the latest M.2 2242 SSD. The laptop supports up to 512GB's in size for the SSD.The socket is located on the underneath of the laptop - under the only little metal cover there is. It is accessed easily with a small Philip's screwdriver which is all you need to add the SSD.The "M.2" is the socket shape at the end of the SSD, and the 2242 are the dimensions. 22mm by 42 mm.Another reviewer here has provided a link on Amazon for a perfect option. If you want a CHEAP £15 64GB disk option, I've discovered how to "extend" the built in hard disk storage simply by using a Micro SD card plugged in, without the cost of a real eMMC hard disk! It's slower - of course, but much cheaper and you are likely to already have one. Because the Micro SD card fits plush against the case when it's inserted - it's simple to leave in the laptop as a semi-permanent storage expansion. To add your Micro SSD as part of the "fixed disk storage" use "Disk Manager" in Windows to map the Micro SD to an empty folder on the hard disk.Doing this enables fussy software to be installed on it - rather than being prevented with the message "You cannot install this software on removable drives!")I've tested the laptop on "high performance" plugged into a power supply, and also when it's on power saving mode - both give good results. The power save option is fine for scrolling through web pages, and typing Word documents - though DX 9 games will be a little stuttery.I've found I've been getting a good 8 hours of use while I've been web-surfing, email writing, and Word processing. In fact, I'm writing this review on the laptop right now!Surprisingly for this price range of laptop - I found the screen is one of its best features - it's very clear at wide angles, and has good contrast without any noticeable "screen door" effect that you see when your eyes are close up to a cheap display. It has an anti-reflection matte screen coating, and the illumination ranges from very dim bedroom-at-night levels, to bright enough to see in a sunlit room.Blurring while you scroll through web pages is also minimal - which I would have only expected on a laptop costing twice as much as this. So it's good to see this laptop performing so well here. They keyboard has a short-travel X type mechanism, which felt responsive and not "squishy". I found the short travel meant I was not pressing the keys as long, which sped my typing up a little. It has an English layout - the hash, £, $ and € are where you expect them to be.The mouse mat's matte which provided a nice smooth sliding effect for my finger. There was no juddering of my fingertip over the surface because of it. It's also nice and large.I've found that some touch-pads that have their buttons molded into the surface of the touch-pad sometimes interfere with the mouse positioning when clicking with one finger and dragging with another.I'm happy to see this was NOT the case here. The power supply is great (though it does only have a one and a half meter cable) - it's a simple and small "wall wart" power adapter. Rather than the big and heavy "monster" power supplies you'll have had on other laptops.Carrying it around doesn't add much weight at all.I've got benchmark images for the internal memory, USB memory stick and SD Card which you can see in the images. As you can see for yourself in the screenshots - the SSD is plenty fast enough.Overall the laptop is good.It has basic features - but they are not cheap. The case it metal, the screen is very good, and the touchpad is large and responsive. The lid hinges feel secure, and the device runs stably and stays very cool.Due to the 4GB RAM (none upgradable), the laptop is best used with 1 or 2 programs open at once. New and memory intensive applications like Photoshop Creative Cloud, and the latest games would really stretch the machine. It also wouldn't be suitable if you have a workflow that needs several complex and large programs open at once - such as a CAD design package, Photoshop with several large images, Word, Excel and Outlook at once.It is perfect for surfing the Internet, using Outlook, checking and writing Email, using MS Office (the resolution is high enough), and playing older DirectX 9 games, and games online. In fact it can run several of these programs at once. The video performance of the laptop is great - YouTube 1080p high definition videos played without glitching, and they looked bright and "popped". The built in speakers where a little light in bass, but it was audible.Using a good set of headphones via the 3.5mm headphone jack produced very deep bass.I needed this laptop for while I'm out of the office and it has been more than up to the business tasks I've completed on it.Excellent!Photos:A: Internal disk.B: SanDisk Ultra 64GB microSD XC Memory Card + SD Adapter with A1 App Performance up to 100MB/s, Class 10, U1.C: SanDisk Extreme 64 GB USB Flash Drive USB 3.0.D: Benchmark results.E: CPU - Quad cor, currently running at 1.9GHz (can go to 2.1GHz for short amounts of time).F: Right side - Micro SD Card slot, USB 3, headphones, and power socket.G: Left side - USB C, charging light, Micro HDMI socket, and USB 3.H: In built webcam - microphone just out of view.I: Two of the four speaker vents in the dark area below the screen bevel.J: Additional SSD location on base - Philips screw secured cover.K: Power (DC), headphones, USB 3 socket, and Micro SD card slot - with my SD card in it. Sturdy ultra-budget ultrabook
Intro:If you're looking for a high end ultra portable laptop that will blow your socks off in terms of performance, stop reading. If you're looking for an ultra-budget laptop that has most of the modern features you could want for a bargain price, then you may be interested in this (as I was)There aren't many brand new laptops around for sub-£200, but I wanted something cheap to use when the Wife is hogging the MacBook so thought I would give this a go, and it was listed as "Amazon's Choice" when I was browsing.First Impressions:So what are the first impressions like? The packaging is simple, and no frills. You get the laptop and a charger. That's it. The laptop came well protected, and my first observations that the device itself is really well made. It's not dissimilar at all to an Apple MacBook in terms of the all metal chassis and black keyboard. It feels solidly put together, much more so than some higher end devices, and looking at the device there are a few ports to play with - including a couple of USB 3 sockets, a USB C socket and Micro SD card reader. There is also Micro HDMI out for connection to an external display or TV. The laptop is clearly straight out of China with Chinese writing all over the box, in the manual and when you turn it on for the first time and are asked to select a language, Chinese is first on the list. This isn't a problem, and set up is a doddle and soon enough you're into the familiar Windows 10 environment.Using the Device:The keyboard is a joy to use, and the screen is crisp and sharp. It's Full HD. Mine did come with a 'dead pixel' though which is disappointing. Minor, and doesn't impede use but a shame none the less. I noticed that Windows wasn't activated when I signed in, and had to go through the troubleshooting screen to get activated but I'm not sure if this is normal. In terms of performance, as the device has solid state storage it's quite fast at opening internet browser windows etc. A degradation in performance is noticeable when you try and multi task and things start to lag. But for less than £200, you would expect this. It's only powered by one of the new Celeron chips which replaced the budget Atom processors so these are NOT meant to be powerful computers.Because it's not super powerful, battery life seems to be excellent, into many hours. Initial impressions suggest better than my MacBook.Storage is limited - 64Gb of which much will be consumed by the OS, however I store all of my files on a NAS so not an issue, and if needed I believe there is a spare M2 slot for expansion. Conclusion:Given the cost, I really can't grumble about this laptop. It's not going to set your world on fire in terms of performance and if you're patient with it, it will do as you ask (as long as you aren't planning on doing Photoshop or gaming etc etc). The construction of the chassis is superb, and is metal rather than metal effect. The keyboard is very Mac-esque and a joy to type on, and the screen is good. I'm disappointed to have the stuck pixel, and I'm not sure what happened with the Windows 10 activation (there isn't a windows product activation key anywhere in the box) so on these points a star is deducted, but really... where else are you going to find an up to date laptop with USB-C, 4Gb RAM, Solid State HDD, HDMI and a 14" Full HD screen for less than £200 - delivered! If I have any more observations as I continue to use it, I'll update the review. Hope this helps.
