Can I use as a receiver using my passive Bose 161 speakers as external speakers?

Yes it can with passive speakers it is a good amplifier for the price. I use it to power two passive Dolby height speakers on my 9.2 Dolby Atmos Denon AV Reciever.

Does this need a pre-amp, or can it be connected to a DAC?

I've got this connected to a Project Pre Box S2 DAC which is connected to my PCs. This works well for me.

which model would be best for AE 100 series, max 75w, min impedance 6 ohms plugged into an applemac mini

TPA3116 - only 19V power supply, so less than 50w into 6 ohm. - and no tone control. TB10A probably better, esp if you need tone control. The 24v power supply gives more ability to turn up the bass. Allan Hendry. MonoPulse.

Anyone have problems with background noise from the v1.0g. i play a lot of classical as well as rock. i was hoping for complete silence when its on.
