Do you put egg timer in water befor it starts to boil or after?

Before it starts to boil. My entire family now uses this egg timer and find it easy to use and produces a reliable hard boiled egg.

What colour does this change to when reaching specific done-ness? Ive got the blue one, but does it turn white or red or?

I have always gotten the red ones. It has 3 stages as the eggs cook to a specific done-ness. It will turn almost completely white for a hard boiled egg. Hope this helps.

Will this work with steamed eggs as well as with boiled?

Not sure about the steamed eggs. It works really well with boiled ones
