The photos in this edition are black and white. The Northrop YF-23 stealth fighter was evaluated with the Lockheed YF-22. Two aircraft were built, PAV-1 and PAV-2. The Chief Test Pilot for the program was Paul Metz, the author of this book. Although the YF-22 was eventually chosen for production, the YF-23 ATF proved to be a very capable and superb example of Low Observable (LO) fighter technology. This book covers origins of the ATF requirement, other manufacturers submissions including alternate Northrop designs, RFI phase May 1981 to May 1982, CDI phase May 1983 to May 1984, ATF DEM/VAL phase 1986 through 1991, Northrop ATF evolution 1971-1986, ATF team, construction, flight test program, engines, summary and selection, NATF proposal, F/B-23 proposal, aircraft nuts-and-bolts, where are they now, program patches, YF-23 pilots, and YF-23 models. La brochure s'étend aussi sur les errements du programme ATF qui a finalement abouti à deux prototypes plutôt esthétiquement réussis alors que les premiers croquis auraient pu faire craindre le pire.

A l'heure où les premières images de synthèse du SCAF nous montrent un appareil avec un empennage en V, il est intéressant de s'interroger sur l'échec du prototype YF-23 qui reprenait la même formule aéronautique. Cette brochure ne répond pas à la question et reste d'ailleurs relativement discrète sur certaines caractéristiques de l'appareil (capacité interne en carburant, poussée à sec, etc...). Sur ce type d'appareil furtif, l'intégration de l'armement pose aussi problème ainsi que l'ouverture des soutes à grande vitesse. Lavishly Illustrated With An Extraordinary Amount Of Text
High quality, with an extraordinary amount of text and color (!) for a Ginter publication. This volume qualifies as a book instead of the monograph typical of the Air Force Legends series. The author who has intimate 1st hand perspective of the YF-23,starts with a history of stealth aircraft and their impact on the USAF and the contemporary design philosophies of the competing companies. Each phase of the competitions that led to the ATF competition are well illustrated with the competing designs. One can see the precursors of the Rockwell HiMat, Grumman X-29, the McDonnell Douglas A-12 and others as the companies evolved their designs to meet the changing USAF requirements. This alone makes the book worthwhile! The chapters on construction and flight test are also well described along with the skepticism of test flight crew about the performance envelope of the airframe and fire control systems during the flight control and simulation phases of development. (The author was a F-105G pilot.) Significant coverage of the F/B-23 and the proposed naval versions are also provided making this single volume complete for the vast majority of readers. Also, unusually for this series, a bibliography is provided. (Mostly magazine articles and internal USAF documents.) The author also delves briefly in system descriptions while providing lavish amounts of photographs and cutaway drawings of the YF-23, its precursors and proposed derivatives. I believe the Air Force Legends is usually aimed mostly for modelers. This volume caters not just to modelers, but anyone who has an interest in the YF-23. Highly recommended!

懐かしいATF競争機
YF-23のモノグラフです。（オールカラー） YF-23に関する資料はいままでほとんどなかっと思いますが、この本でYF-23に関することを詳しく知ることができます。 内容はATF(Advanced Tactical Fighter)の概念から始まり、開発期、飛行試験、量産型･派生型イメージ、ディテール、模型レビュー等ボリュームたっぷりの153ページ！ 2機しか存在しなかったYF-23ですが、現役当時の写真が多数載せられており、特にエンジンノズル周辺の写真は興味深いですね… また、量産型となったであろうF-23のエアインテークには現在F-35に使われているDSI（ダイバータレス超音速インレット）が採用される予定だったことなど、ライバルであったYF-22よりも先進的であったことを感じさせ、量産型の形状が試作型とほとんど変わらないのもYF-23の完成度の高さを窺わせます。 ディテールのセクションでは1、2号機の違いも説明されています。 模型レビューのセクションはページ数は少ないですが、最近のホビーボス製品まで触れられています。 中学の時に作ったタミヤのウォーバード（イタレリ）をまた作りたくなる一冊でした！値段は高いですが納得の一冊です。

Flugzeug-Nerds aufgepasst: Dieses Buch ist für euch!
Wenn ihr euch schon immer für Flugzeuge und Technik begeistert habt, dann ist dieses Buch definitiv etwas für euch! Die Northrop YF-23 ATF wird hier bis ins kleinste Detail beschrieben und ihr werdet die Entwicklungsgeschichte dieses Kampfjets lieben. Vor- und Nachteile: Der Autor hat sich wirklich viel Mühe gegeben, alle Aspekte des Flugzeugs zu beleuchten. Von der Konzeption über den Bau bis hin zum Testflug wird alles ausführlich erklärt. Die vielen technischen Details können jedoch auch etwas überwältigend sein, vor allem für diejenigen, die keine Vorkenntnisse haben. Aber hey, wer sich für ein solches Buch entscheidet, sollte sich darüber im Klaren sein, dass es hier nicht um leichte Lektüre geht. Fazit: Alles in allem ist "Northrop YF-23 ATF" ein fantastisches Buch für alle Flugzeug-Nerds da draußen! Der Autor bringt einem die faszinierende Technologie der Northrop YF-23 ATF auf eine humorvolle Art und Weise näher und es ist ein echtes Vergnügen, dieses Buch zu lesen. Wer Interesse an der Luftfahrt hat und tiefer in die Materie eintauchen möchte, der sollte dieses Buch auf jeden Fall lesen!
