Panzer columns took the outlying villages and widely separated strongpoints in bitter fighting, and advanced to points near Bastogne in four days, due to heavy rainfall only one road could be used as a crossing point allowing the 101st Airborne reinforced by elements of the 9th and 10th Armored divisions to arrive in Bastogne ahead of the German Army on December 19th. The fierce defense of Bastogne in which the soldiers of the 101st Airborne distinguished themselves, made it impossible for the Germans to capture the town with it's important road junctions. On the 22nd, the Germans demanded unconditional surrender to which the commander of U.S. Forces at Bastogne, Brigadier General Anthony McAuliffe sent this reply back to the Germans, "NUTS".
