TERRAMASTER F6-424 NAS 6-Bay, Intel N95 4-Core CPU, 8GB DDR5 (Diskless) | Dual 2.5GbE Ports, Network Attached Storage with High Performance (Diskless)

I got this to upgrade from a Synology 2-bay NAS. It is pretty good hardware for the price, relative to other appliance type NAS devices. Inside there is a very small USB drive that holds the Terramaster OS, but if you remove that you can install something else - this does involve disassembling it though. I put TrueNAS Scale on it right away, so I can't speak to the stock OS, but I have had no issues with TrueNAS compatibility.The N95 processor is very efficient and the unit stays pretty cool, but if you want to run a ton of containers you might need something with more processing power. Overall a good piece of hardware with a lot of bays.

I got two of these F6-424 units last year, before the memory and storage price increases. I got them to upgrade two of my old unRAID setups (that are 13-year-old systems). I replaced the included 8GB of RAM with 32GB crucial memory sticks. And I had no issues replacing the internal USB stick with San Disk Ultra Fit USB sticks that I use with unRAID. I also Installed a 1TB Samsung 970 Plus NVMe drive in each, for the unRAID cache drive.They have been working great with unRAID. And recently I installed another NVMe drive. A 128GB Patriot P300 to boot unRAID from the NVMe instead of the USB. Next, I need to completely remove the USB stick. But, right now, it is still validating the unRAID license from the USB stick.

UPDATE: I’ve owned four TerraMaster units over the years, so I went into this F6-424 with high hopes especially after upgrading it right away with maxed-out RAM and dual NVMe drives for caching/system. The hardware itself feels solid on paper: 6 bays, decent CPU, tool-free trays, hot-swap support, and the ability to handle large drives. But in real-world use, this has been a letdown and feels like a step backward from even my older TerraMaster models. The biggest frustrations stem from the proprietary TOS 6 software and TRAID RAID system. Configuring the storage pool is painfully slow and cumbersome as you have to add hard drives one at a time, and each addition triggers a full synchronization/rebuild process that takes multiple days (often 1–3 days per drive, depending on size and capacity, with large 14–20TB drives pushing toward the longer end). Even with all six bays eventually filled, the initial setup and any expansions dragged on for what seemed like weeks of waiting, during which the NAS is noisy, resource-heavy, and often unresponsive in the interface. After configured and connected to my 2.5GB LAN and 1GB WAN, performance remains surprisingly sluggish for file transfers and operations despite the upgrades and the system is temperamental with random notifications or issues needing reboots/tweaks to stay stable. To me, TOS 6 feels even more proprietary and locked-down than previous products, with fewer flexible options and heavy reliance on TerraMaster’s ecosystem (TRAID, their apps, etc.). It reminds me of clunky tech from the early 2000s: inconsistent behavior, no real polish, and way too much babysitting required. At this price point, I expected smoother operation out of the box, better optimization, and far less downtime during setup/expansion. The hardware has potential, but the software holds it back badly. I can't advise on alternatives as I've invested so heavily over the decade+ in TerraMaster products, At this point I will look elsewhere. This is my fourth TerraMaster, and unfortunately, it’s pushing me to move on entirely.Pros (to be fair): Easy physical upgrades (RAM/NVMe)Good build quality and 6-bay countHot-swap support works wellCons: Extremely slow and multi-day synchronization when adding/configuring drives one by one in proprietary TRAIDSluggish and unreliable performance even fully upgradedOverly proprietary OS with limited flexibilityFeels outdated and overpriced for what it deliversRequires constant maintenance/tweaks to keep running smoothlyIf TerraMaster dramatically improves TOS in future updates (especially TRAID setup times and stability), maybe it could redeem itself but right now it's disappointing for the cost and marketing hype.

PROBLEM #1: No network!!! Imagine previously having had another Terramaster NAS which worked as advertised. Not perfect, but acceptable. Then, you buy this pricey NAS, you power it on (after searching and finding the unusually positioned tiny power button), and all you get is periodic beeps. Your router does not see the NAS on the local network, and this NAS never requested an IP address from DHCP. A NAS without network access is just an expensive paper weight, there is nothing that can be done with it.Then you contact Terramaster support, and they say, hmmm, the memory may be loose, open up the NAS and move the memory stick to another slot?????????? How many people are comfortable to do this?? Also, doesn't opening the box void warranty? First support promises a quick replacement, but then keep putting up more hurdles before you can get a replacement.What happened to quality control? The way support answered, there seem to be quite a few units like this, and I can imagine the deluge after Black Friday.Bottom line, I expected a lot more from a German product, also based on my experience with previous Terramaster products. But in the end, you get what you pay. For me, data loss is not a joke so I am going back to Synology. Yes it's more than twice the price of Terramaster, but you get a serious, mature, rock solid NAS that will protect your data. Also, consider that none of the Synology NASes went on sale during Black Friday/Cyber Monday - there must be a reason like high demand.PROBLEM #2: No documentation whatsoever. And you have to give your email address to just get the installation manual.Problem #3: There is no Reset pin hole on this NAS. So how are you supposed to reset it??? Who knows, there is no user manual.UPDATE #1: I forgot to mention, their Android App called TNAS crashes within 3 seconds of launching, every single time. Terramaster, do you test anything before releasing?I have until end of January to return this poor, sad product.

Honestly, I don’t know anything about these (NAS). An IT buddy of mine is the one that recommended it. It works perfect with Plex for watching movies TV shows, etc. And you can use any hard drives unlike some other brands. Compact in aize (6 day) too!

If all you are doing is network storage or Plex direct play, this thing does fine. But, if you are needing any type of transcoding above 1080p you can forget about it.

This was my 2nd Terramaster NAS (currently running a T5-221). This was my 4th NAS overall (still have 2 older ones running by Synology and Netgear as well).I've never has any issues on my older NAS's (Netgear and Synology) but my Terramaster bought in 2020 has been a little buggy (I was having intermittent slowness and occasional disconnects when copying data to it) Also despite having much superior hardware to my older NAS's (dual CPU and 6 GB RAM) I wasn't seeing much better performance.This F6-424 was by far the best hardware for you buck, destroying prices in competitors like QNAP, Synology, and Asustor (all which I checked out in detail) but reviews on the Terramaster were a bit sketchy, and my own experience has been less than stellar.I received my NAS quickly and started to upgrade (16Gb memory) went great, (1 TB SSD) for caching also went great. This NAS had incredible specs. Now it was time to add my 6 - 14TB drives and setup a RAID5. This is where my problems started. I kept getting intermittent network connectivity when it was trying to synch the drives, resulting in me needing to restart the NAS to get back into the setup. The reboot would kill the RAID sync and I would have to start over. I tried using both 2.5gb ports (separately and together), but the issue would happen everytime the RAID sync started. I tried just setting up a single drive and it would work fine.Now to note I never contacted support (I'm very technical, have never had issues in the past, and just don't use support for any brand very often. I was also disappointed that I had so many issues with a brand new product.Finally in desperation I removed the hardware upgrades (memory and SSD), and tried to do a factory reset to start over. The factory reset failed and the NAS couldn't even boot anymore so I was dead in the water. I decided to cut my losses, send the NAS back to amazon as DOA, and purchased a competitor from QNAP.Now using the same SSD, and 14 TB sata drives, I was able to setup the QNAP in 24 hours (including syncing my 6 drives. I was able to transfer 30 TB of media in 3 days, and the QNAP NAS has been running perfectly now for about a month. This is what I expected with the new Terramaster but had way too many issues.I'll assume I received a bad NAS and only rating a 3 star (although my experience of wasted time was definitely 1 star, and my 5 year old Terramaster I would only give 3 stars too.For price - hardware Terramaster is absolutely destroying the competition, I have to give them 5 starts in taking my return, I boxed it back up, brought it to Amazon for packing, and received a credit within a week. I did not use support so I can't hay how they would have been. If you are shopping NAS's the competitors QNAP, Synology, and Asustor all have much better reviews, but you will generally pay 20%+ more for similar hardware.

Decided to get a non-max version of the F6-424 since the price difference is huge and I probably wouldn't need the extra compute power. Even though this one with the N95 processor is supposedly limited to 16gb of ram maximum (as per Intel), I was able to replace the 8gb stick with a 32gb no problem (note: this one has one ram slot as it is single channel, the max has two and supports dual channel)It was also a breeze to flash the 4gb usb stick with TrueNAS Scale installer using rufus on Windows, after minor tear down to take out the USB for flashing. TrueNAS Scale loves ram so I'm really happy it's able to use the 32gb no sweat.

Terramaster is a nice NAS system. Hard to get things going at times but a great user community to get help

This NAS is not for people already experience using Synology, QNAP, or Truenas. Simple task like remote mount from or to other nas device is nightmare to setup and 99% it would not work. SMB is totally useless when comes to remote mounting. I only manage to NFS working for Qnap. Even I successfully mounted, it will not allow you to copy files from the search result. You will need to go actual folder of file and copy from there. I guess there is reason why they allow you to install 3rd party OS since their TOS 6 still a mediocre OS
