Good value Tawny
Good value tawny port. Smooth, sweet, sticky and hangs around in your mouth, what more do you want need. We made the mistake of opening before Christmas (you have to sample before serving to friends) now there’s very little left and we’ll probably need another bottle.

Beautiful Port, however the cork snapped on opening.
This Port is absolutley gorgeous. However, despite rotating the bottle to ensure the cork had moisture before opening it snapped off. I did pull it straight up and did not bend. I was just really luck that some of the cork that was stuck in the bottle was above the lip so I could just pull it out, and I didn't have to end up straining the port into the glass!

Best quality tawny port at great price
I visited Porto recently and did the tours of a few of the port houses over in Vila Nova de Gaia. There are quite a few of them as you can imagine, some better than others. Of course, the wine itself is no longer transported down the Rio Douro in wooden rafts but there is still plenty of heritage and time honoured traditions of manufacturing this particular fortified wine which was devised by the British during the Napoleonic wars to ensure that the nobility still had wine on their table. You learn a lot on these tours and you also get a feel for which type you prefer whether than be ruby, tawny, vintage or late bottled. My favourite was the tawny and my favourite port house was Grahams. Tawny has the most flavour and it is a lighter brown colour than the heavier types. Grahams is the hardest port house to visit as it is up a steep hill with most of the others being on the riverside. It is worth the climb though as the views are spectacular, as are the wines. You really get a sense that Grahams is the classiest place too, it is still family owned and has resisted the temptation to "join forces" (i.e. sell out) to the global drinks conglomerates and this has ensured that their quality has remained high. They own their own vineyards too, unlike some of the inferior brands, and I was really impressed with the set up there. So the combination of tawny and Grahams for me is an absolute winner. This is 10 year old and not as subtle as the 20 but, to be honest, at this price which is little more than you would pay for a bottle of plonk in a restaurant, it is an absolute bargain. Comes in a nice tube too.
