With Scotty power grip plus line releases, the fishing line is gripped between the soft pads, and variable release tension is attained by moving the line in or out of the jaws. **Q: how much can they hold?**
A: I use them as modified downriggers for trolling for trout in my kayak.  They'll comfortably hold 1 1/4 - 1 1/2 oz cannon ball weights, and I have yet to lose one.  Other reviews have mentioned using weights as big as 4 oz, and I can believe this.  The Clips can also be adjusted for more tension, but I have never found this to be necessary.  Hope this helps..
