Expensive. And worth it.
I was a big skeptical about this fan. It has good reviews but some people really didn't like it. Given we are seeing a lot of hot days I figured it was worth a try and I could always return it. The first thing you will notice is that it is actually quite compact, but that doesn't stop it from moving a lot of air. So it is a lot smaller than other window fans I have owned yet it moves as much if not more air. And those previous fans were pretty loud, but NOT THIS ONE! It is really really quiet, which is awesome if you are going to leave it on when you sleep. Three speeds seems sufficient, and I love the push button direction changing, so you can use it for exhausting hot air from a room before you change the direction to bring in cooler night air. The only weird thing about it is the little foam ears they provide. It isn't obvious how they are supposed to work, and I think this aspect of the product could improve, but I did manage to get a combination of foams that seals around the fan and minimizes leakage. How would I improve this? I would love it if it had a thermostat setting to shut off when the room is cool enough, and if it was controllable by Apple HomeKit it would be and ideal product for me. Apparently there is an Alexa controllable version, but it is nearly 2X more and I simply don't think it is worth the excess. Even my wife who is very sensitive to products that are too big, too noisy, or just don't work has said she loves the fan as well, so it is unanimous that this was a great purchase and is not going back... might even buy another for the bathroom!

Fits in old, narrow windows!
I now have four of these. One I got used and it came from that expensive airplane catalog brand, but it appears to be exactly the same as this fan. Transom fans are great and very convenient if you have no or limited air conditioning, but they typically let in drafts and rain, and if you live in an older building with narrow windows, almost all of them are too wide to fit. These will genuinely fit in an approximately 21 inch space, unlike others that claim to. There's a baffle that moves into place when it's switched off, so between that and the included spacers, there's very little draft when they're switched off. They still need to come out for the winter, and a strong wind will still move the curtains, but I don't have to worry about my floors getting wet if there's a sudden rain storm. (Follow manufacturer's instructions regarding weather resistance.) Much more convenient than portable fans and much quieter than box fans. Plus, they can be reversed to create air flow through a room or floor. Great fans.

A OK fan in a TERRIBLY designed enclosure.
The good: The fan itself, consider the smaller size, provides decent airflow. Not great, not good, but OK airflow - for the slim size. The neutral: It fits OK into a newer window with no trim or sill (like your average cheap vinyl replacement window). The fan is reversible. The bad: Where to start? This product is such a disappointment - a collection of good ideas ruined by Vornado cheaping out resulting in poor execution, poor fit, and a worse seal than your average $30 (junky) window fan. The biggest issue is the fit of the unit itself - it requires a newer window with tight clearances for a secure fit. It does not fit securely into older windows, any sash windows I tried, or into any of the windows having interior sills/trim that fit against a closed sash (common on older windows, wooden sash windows, etc). Any degree of height or padding adjustment under the unit could have resolved this issue - it is simply cheap/poor design on Vornados part, especially considering the higher price-point. The foam blocks included do little to seal the window and can easily be shifted or pushed out. Bugs and mosquitoes can freely come and go around these blocks and through the unit itself as it has no grill or mesh on the exterior to prevent this. Window fans are rarely the best option, but this Vornado fits so poorly that I can honestly recommend just opening your window or propping a cheap box fan on the sill instead… it will move more air and you’ll deal with same number of bugs and poor seal as you would with this unit. The seal and fit of this unit is unacceptably bad for this price point - try a cheaper fan instead.

We love the Vornado Portal Window Fan
I bought this fan to replace our window air conditioner for the autumn, Winter, and spring months. We love feeling like we are sleeping in arctic conditions and the fresh air this brings in is wonderful! What we love: 💨 the sound 💨 the air flow 💨 the reverse fan function 💨the level of privacy achieved with this fan, you don’t get that with a regular window fan 💨 it looks nice in the window What could be better: 💨 I wish the vent could be positioned it’s fixed and it would be great to pick where to point the air 💨 the 3 airflow indicator lights are too bright 💨 it could be a smidge more powerful All in all, this is one of my favorite purchases in 2025. It’s going to save me $$ because I typically run my window air conditioner every night 365/year. I cannot sleep if I’m hot, plus I need the noise to sleep. I can’t just open my window in the cooler months because of the outside noises so this fan is perfect! I gave 4⭐️ it could have been 5 but the lack of being able to control the direction of the air bugs me a little bit. I still love it! Just not a 5 star love

Best exhaust fan I ever bought.
I have a smoking room in my home. I have purchased 4 fans in 6 years to draw the smoke out. None have been GOOD, none pulled smoke out very well at all and they all stopped working. This fan pulls the smoke out very well. I'm so happy I bought this fan. If you're looking for exhaust it's great. Easy to install and quietest fan I've ever had.

Its a Quality Product but its not pushing enough air to cool a room down
OK so it got up to around 80 outside and my 10 foot by 12 foot bedroom hit around 78 so it was pretty warm.. that evening it cooled down to about 65 degrease and i put this fan in my window and ran it on high speed for 3 hours.. the temperature was still at 78 after 3 hours. so i took this fan out and put in my more traditional style dual window fan and turned it on, after 20 minutes of running that on the low setting, my room temp went down to 74, so it went down about 4 degrees in 20 min with a traditional window fan that is rated for. i love the design of this vornado and if your in the direct line of the air flow and the fan is blowing on you it feels like a nice breeze but it just cant push enough air to cool down a room.. so after the traditional window fan cooled down the room i put the vornado back in. when i woke up in the morning it was 59 degrease outside and my bedroom was still at 74 so this fan is not doing much of anything. i can set it to pull cool air in or push air out but no matter which one of those settings i choose even after it cools down outside its just not pushing enough air to cool a room. but a more traditional dual window fan can easily cool down my room quickly when blowing the cool air from out side into the room. honestly i think the reason to buy a window fan is to either exhaust hot air or blow cool air in in hopes to cool your room down.. this does not, if you just want a fan to circulate some air my DC tornado room fan is great so you may be better off getting something like that, but i find a traditional window fan to be much better than this tornado window fan. but its a quality product and it smees like a good value for the money if all you want is somth8ing to blow so air around the room, not a great value if you want it to cool the room down. the fan is easy to use and has nice controls, it can blow in or out with a push of a button. its designed to rain wont get back into your room if its raining out, the little blocks it come with out make a seal are great.. i thin you get a few 4 inch wide blocks, some 2 inch and some 1 inch blocks, in my window there is a quarter inch gap left over, i wish that gave use a few super thin blocks.. i just took a plastic grocery bag and jammed it it not the tiny crack left and that does the job.. this is a very nice fan and a quality airduct but its not pushing enough air to cool a room.

FAN FRUSTRATION: SPEED SETTING SHAM 💨🪟⚠️ [⭐⭐⭐☠️☠️]
Jay Fray delivering the balanced truth about this Vornado PORTAL window fan that promises variable power but delivers virtually identical speeds! 🧐 Picked up this window fan expecting Vornado’s trademark air circulation quality with meaningful speed control for different cooling needs. The installation was straightforward and the fit in standard windows works well without excessive gaps or stability issues. The overall build quality feels solid with adequate materials for window mounting. 🪟✅ The fan does move air adequately for basic window ventilation needs, providing reasonable airflow that helps with room circulation and temperature management. When operating, it functions as a competent window fan that serves its fundamental purpose of moving air between indoor and outdoor spaces. 💨👍 Where this fan disappoints significantly is in the virtually useless speed settings. Despite advertising 3 distinct speeds, the actual performance differences between low, medium, and high are negligible—essentially creating the illusion of control without meaningful variation in airflow output. 🔄👎 This lack of genuine speed differentiation makes it impossible to fine-tune airflow for different conditions or noise preferences. Whether you need gentle circulation or maximum cooling, you’re essentially getting the same moderate airflow regardless of setting selection. ⚙️❌ The power output overall feels underwhelming compared to marketing claims about air movement capabilities. While adequate for basic window fan duties, it doesn’t deliver the impressive circulation performance typically associated with the Vornado brand reputation. 📊⚠️ Build quality and installation experience are solid, but the performance limitations prevent this from being a standout window fan option. It works adequately as basic window ventilation without excelling in any particular area. 🛠️😐 Jay Fray verdict: A functional window fan that delivers basic air circulation but fails to provide meaningful speed control or impressive airflow performance. Adequate for simple window ventilation needs but disappointing for those expecting Vornado’s typical circulation excellence. Sometimes adequate is just adequate! 🪟🤷♂️

The reviews are correct. Great fan!
This is a first impression review, as I've only used it one night. I have slept with a double fan in my window for years, but the new ones are so LOUD even on the lowest setting and only one side going. I use the exhaust setting to draw air out and in through the window over my bed. The new double fans were useless. I read the reviews on the Vornado and thought it was worth a try. It truly is one of the best I have used in a long time. First of all, it's so quiet, even on exhaust. Second, the foam blocks fit perfectly into the sides to block every bit of air. Third, the flaps seem to close when not in use, which means on super hot days when I'm drawing AC into the room from the hall, I don't have to remove the fan from the window. This is worth the extra money and I would purchase it again.

Great Fan!
Great product. For a fan it does an amazing job. It's almost too cold sometimes.

Garbage
Don’t waste your money!!!! Has 3 speeds and the highest speed is lower than the lowest speed of my Walmart box fan. The only nice thing is that it has blocks to fit your window. But the price is extremely expensive to just throw out, but I don’t use it because it doesn’t do what it’s supposed to.
