Can someone please explain the science behind induction heating? Also, please explain why certain types of utensils won't work with such cooktops.

Induction cooking heats a cooking vessel by magnetic induction, instead of by thermal conduction from a flame, or an electrical heating element. Because inductive heating directly heats the vessel, very rapid increases in temperature can be achieved.In an induction cooker, a coil of copper wire is placed under the cooking pot and an alternating electric current is passed through it. The resulting oscillating magnetic field induces a magnetic flux which repeatedly magnetises the pot, treating it like the lossy magnetic core of a transformer. This produces large eddy currents in the pot, which because of the resistance of the pot, heats it.For nearly all models of induction cooktops, a cooking vessel must be made of, or contain, a ferromagnetic metal such as cast iron or some stainless steels. However, copper, glass, non magnetic stainless steels, and aluminum vessels can be placed on a ferromagnetic interface disk which functions as a conventional hotplate.

1. Plug is surprisingly 5A, i had to change it to 15A as it was burning 5A sockets if used on higher settings.2. u have manual control to warm/simmer.3. yes, it can be used on wooden table.4. Length of cable is about 1.5 feet.Additionally, i'll advice u NOT to buy it as service of Philips is very bad. i had to contact Toll-free number numerous times to get my problem attended. and it took them 35 days for a visit.

What is the difference between model no. HD4928 and model no. HD4929

Nothing much just shape and power capacity are different.....28 is more sleek and have glassy look compared to 29

Question 4

Apart from what buyers have actually tried - What does Philips recommend as the minimum diameter of vessel to use? I only want to heat a coffee mug...

Also am sure you cannot use a coffee mug(ceramic).  All material to be used with Induction should be flat bottomed and made of Steel (which have magnetic properties). Ofcourse, unless you have steel coffee mug.
