Excellent SSD, Great Performance After Finding the Right Enclosure and Cable
I bought the WD_BLACK 8TB SN850X NVMe SSD to use with the UGREEN 80Gbps M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure and connected it to my M4 Max Mac Studio. At first, I noticed fast transfer speeds, but after transferring a few large files, the speed dropped significantly. Unplugging and reconnecting the enclosure temporarily fixed it, but the issue kept happening. I suspected the problem was the UGREEN enclosure since Western Digital drives have always been reliable for me. I returned the UGREEN and replaced it with the OWC Express 1M2 80Gb/s Enclosure. Transfer speeds were excellent, but the drive started disconnecting a couple of minutes after startup. The included USB-C cable was also too short. I replaced it with the OWC 0.8M Thunderbolt 5 (USB-C) Cable, and that completely solved the disconnection issue. Now everything works flawlessly, with consistent speeds of around 5800 MB/s write and 5600 MB/s read, and the enclosure stays cool during long transfers. It took some troubleshooting, but I’m very satisfied with the final setup.

"These prices!"🤯
It's a great SSD but, I was fortunate to get it for less than $600 at the time. If you can get it for a reasonable price I do recommend. The Sabrent heat sink I use is excellent as well and not expensive. Using both in "fat" Playstation 5.

Be Ware
I Bought this WDdrive on 11/22/24 from Amazon. From the very beginning I’ve had issues with it's performance. It appears that you can not run this drive at or near the rated speed for extended periods or it will over heat and throttle itself no matter what you do to try and keep it cool. I installed it in the ACASIS 40Gbps M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure after only a few weeks of dealing with the throttling issue. I assumed this would resolve the problem since it has a built in fan, WRONG. If I try to do a large read write operation such as a full back up or adding a large photo shoot it will over heat, every time. The worst issue that makes me believe that this drive has a serious design defect was when I connected it to the Thunderbolt port on my new ROG desktop. With the drive just plugged in, and idling, no data being written or read, it would still overheat. I discovered that I could not use it on the thunderbolt port on the ROG at all or would overheat quickly. Even when in throttle mode the temp continued to climb. At that point I decided to only use it on the USB 3.2 ports but still continued to have issues with overheating. On July 2 the drive failed while doing minor image edits in Lightroom. The message shown in the image below read. “S.M.A.R.T. Test warning” “WD_Black SN850X 8000GB” “SMART Status is Bad. Please backup and replace the device”. Then the real fun began. I switched over to my back up system and contacted Sandisk Support. Surprise WD sold there SSD product line to Sandisk. After I sent Sandisk the requested images of the front and back of the drive, and error message, they said ship it back and they would replace it. Well they didn’t. After they got it, they said the drive was damaged and they would not replace it. To make matters worse they did not want to return my disk to me. I had to make make multiple calls and chats to force the return of the drive. Because of the terrible product performance and very sketchy support. I strongly advise against buying this product or any other from WD or Sandisk. One final comment: I have since noticed that the WD_BLACK 2TB SN770 that I am using as my internal D: drive is having the same issue.

The best m.2 SSD available
I picked up three of these last year, and I'm finally writing a review now. The WD Black 8TB PCIe 4.0 SSD is top tier. It has great read and write speeds, doesn't overheat, and has been very reliable. I've got one in the laptop I'm using to write this review, and another in a Proxmox box just a few feet away. I keep the third one in a portable TB5 SSD enclosure. I've posted sreeenshots of disk benchmarks I ran in Linux and Windows VMs on the Proxmox box. The VMs have the native default filesystems (ext4 & ntfs), and the Proxmox hypervisor has an xfs filesystem. Even with all the overhead from the VMs and different filesystems, the performance is very good. (I used JDiskMark for the benchmarks. It's a platform independent Java-based disk benchmarking tool.)

Excellent drive with excellent performance, but...
First these drivers are flawless, I have four of them. I can't recommend them enough .... at the prices I paid for them. As recently as September, these 8tb drives were around $530-$545. (Those are the prices I paid for 4 drives across 3 different orders over the course of 4 months. Now thx to *gestures vaguely* they want $889 for the same drive. That is an insane increase on par with recent RAM prices. If you absolutely have to get one, then I still recommend this drive over any of the other 8tb m.2 drives out there, but know that you are paying well over what these drives should cost. If you can wait, consider it.

Perfect upgrade! works flawlessly, fast and without issues.
I bought this 8TB drive during black friday 2024 over a year ago for $535 and im so glad i did, it still works perfectly on my gaming laptop where i got almost my whole STEAM library of games installed on it. today Jan 11 2026 with the shortage of Ram and NAND chips this same Drive is listed at $899. this thing is perfect and for a PCIe Gen4 NVME drive this is the best available 8TB Drive. there are others like the Samsung SSD 9100 PRO but that is PCIe Gen5 it is backwards compatible with GEN4 but you are praying a premium for performance you cant use if your motherboard/Device cant use GEN5.

Fine product, but beware of sketchy sellers
Well, the product is fine. Fast, high capacity. It's great. But it seem some sellers/suppliers are trying to pass-off the 2TB variant as 8TB (see picture), and are just putting a sticker for the 8TB ASIN/SKU on the 2TB box/item. So be warned and check it when you receive it to make sure you got what you actually paid for!

Good choice for economical high storage without feeling like one needs to be stuipd rich.
I use Western Digital (WD) Gen 4 8Tb as it is a name-brand, economical competitor to Samsung and Sabrent 8TBs. Sure, I'm missing some read/write speed compared to Samsung and Sabrent when gaming, even online, but honestly, it is not noticeable. I run high-end rigs, but I'm not paying over $300 for a motherboard, nor am I doing anything where money or my ego is on the line. Been running two 8tb WD as gaming drives since Oct 2024. With no issues, and I intend to use the three more I am getting as game drives as well. If you have a sizable game collection and need an economical high-capacity storage choice from a well-known brand. Can't go wrong with WD.

Klockren SSD!
