What is the reason that the tag says line dry only? Why can't these be dried in the dryer?

I put mine in the washer & dryer with other blankets, it comes out fine. Try using gentle cycle & cold water the first time to see how it works for you. I love these blankets! I suppose if you always line dried them they'd perhaps stay in better condition in the long run.
