A compatible sealant or Teflon tape are sufficient. **Q: I'm a fairly new pool owner and I'm assuming the pool level needs to be below the returns when replacing this fitting?** A: i only needed to replace the inside part of this fitting. So I did not lower my pool level. if i had to replace the ouside part i would still not lower the level. i would have pluggrd the hole until i had the new part in place. i can't imagine you would leak to many gallons while you made the switch. **Q: will this work with pool wall thickness of 1 1/8 inch?** A: Never heard of a wall that thick. I use them in concrete walls and retrofit them for my use. Im sure you could do same thing just put cement on backside to hold it in place **Q: If the inside of pool ring is cracked could that be the cause of a leak? Cracked between the 2 screws** A: I believe that I read that it can be. I have had some cracks in mine that I thought could be leaking, but after replacing them it did not appear that they were leaking. If they did leak, I suspect the rate of leakage would be small.
