Review: The RajMan (Fan) Review - UPDATE: In Honor and Memory of Chadwick Boseman (1976 - 2020) UPDATE: Academy Award Winner for Music (Original Score) 2/24/2019 UPDATE: Grammy Award Winner for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media 2/10/2019 Black Panther is one of the absolute best Marvel Cinematic Universe movies and certainly the most unique, and its corresponding soundtrack is definitely the best of the bunch. Ludwig Goransson has created music that is every bit as remarkable as the movie it underscores, especially in its visceral, life-affirming revelry of African sounds and rhythms. Based on his personal, firsthand research into and study of African musical traditions, Goransson structured his compositions around indigenous vocals, tribal chants, and exotic ethnic instruments, especially drums and percussion (Police drummer Stewart Copeland employed a similar process for his groundbreaking 1985 Afro-pop/rock album The Rhythmatist). The result is an incredible, epic work of Afrocentric world music fused with hip techno and electronica and rousing, soaring symphony orchestra. "Wakanda," "Warrior Falls," and the last four tracks of the album are excellent, perfectly capturing the film’s interwoven themes of family, honor, and heroism. The Black Panther score is not only the cream of the crop of Marvel and superhero movie soundtracks, but it also ranks among the most memorable film music of all time.
Review: Score!!! Another One for Ludwig Goransson. - If Wakanda is a character in the movie, The Black Panther, this score is the soundings of the drives, dreams, and pain of characters. The combination of African instruments and voices are the heart beat and blood flow of the different tribes that make up the country. The western instruments are used to translate the score for non-afrikaners like myself. It,s impossible to listen to the opening of the song "Wakanda" without feeling inspired and hopeful. The themes used for Killmonger are so tormented, hunted and driven that you can hear the pain of the boy and the man he became. One of my favorite pieces is the "Casino Brawl"'s "yep" (as Ryan Coogler calls it) which is used when the Dora are fighting. I love that mesmerizing chant and wish it were incorporated into a longer work but a focus listen reviews how much it' woven through the movie. I've loved movie scores all my life and am a fan of Elmer Bernstein, John, Barry, Thomas Newman and the never appreciated Gordon Parks Sr and this score stands with them as one of the very best scores ever written. It is more a part of the movie and it's characters that anything I've heard. It's adding that layer you lose when a novel becomes a movie. You just can't know what the characters are going through internally unless there is a narrator or there is a music score like this one. A great score stands on it's own and makes you want to watch the movie again as you listen to it. More than a few times I've found myself listening to this music and stop only to watch the movie. Wonderful music. Wonder full music.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Just as EPIC as the movie! Perfect mood setting music for your next WIP.

Just as epic here as when I experienced it in the theater! So much complexity--I particularly enjoyed how the instrumentation nodded to hip hop sensibilities throughout the African inspired work. I look forward to digging into the musical traditions from Africa that brought Wakanda to life. The themes for various characters are distinct and make this a dynamic and original score. King T'Challa's fanfare is pure power. Fight scene tracks will get your blood pumping (like toward the end of Casino Brawl.) The composer also doesn't shy away from choral elements, so you get that extra emotional infusion in any given scene--majestic and bitter (Ancestral Plain), triumphant joy (Glory to Bast), menacing revenge--you name it. Killmonger's theme fits his character so well--innocence betrayed, pain, revenge. Percussion, horns and vocals are probably my favorite elements, but if you are a fan of score music I guarantee there's something here for you. This score raises the bar for Marvel movies, which typically stick to one solid core theme, but don't establish a lot of variation beyond that from track to track. (CA:WS is probably the next strongest score in the MCU, imho) I hope this score put the incredibly talented world of movie composers on notice. I enjoy a lot of score and trailer music to zone out with while I'm writing stories--if you do the same, pick this up...!
