813476 Double Lens Magnifier, 3.5X

I bought this after seeing it on a youtube video and reading the praise in these reviews. I have to say that I was really disappointed in what I received - three times. The first one was very dirty and had scuffs on the body surfaces to I thought maybe it was a used return and had Amazon ship me a replacement. Well, the second item was just as bad in both aspects. This unit is sealed such that you really can't disassemble it to clean or I would have done that happily. So next, I emailed Bausch & Lomb to ask about this quality issue, and long story short after some very pleasant exchanges with two people there, and after an unfortunate nine week time frame, I eventually received not one but two replacement items directly from the manufacturer. Guess what? One was just as bad with debris and the other was actually worse. By this time it was well past my return window here, but to make it worse these were sent without the packaging and vinyl case, just in some clear plastic storage boxes, so there's no way I could return them to Amazon anyway. Although the folks at Bausch & Lomb were really great to talk to, I kinda feel robbed of the expense and I'm left with two very substandard lenses that I can't work with. There are probably uses/people that will not mind the debris in the field of view but for me that's a deal killer on the product - it really is excessive and bad, not just a stray fiber or speck of dust here and there. I don't know what to say except turn to a decent model from China (there are some) and I really hate to say that because I try to support USA manufacturing wherever possible. I found a very nice unit on aliexpress for a third of the cost and while its lens isn't spectacular it's quite good, and clean. I will say that this Bausch & Lomb lens is clear and free of distortion and fringing, so that's nice (and expected from them)...wish they could make them clean inside.

That means that you can hold it at a distance to use it, without having to put it to your eye like a jewelry loupe.Don’t mistake this for similar-looking products that are just a glass or plastic dome in a fancy shell. The B & L Double Lens Magnifier is two glass lenses held in a black plastic barrel marked Bausch & Lomb 3.5X. My unit is 1.4 inches high with a diameter of 2.3 inches. When it is in focus, you can observe the image from over one foot away (this means you can look at text or a specimen on the table without bending over).This is a simple lens. The glass is not coated, aplanatic or achromatic. You don’t need any LEDs, electronics or batteries, because you hold this hand lens well away from your specimen — if you can see it with your naked eye, you can see it with this lens.Mine came in a box marked Bausch & Lomb, made in Rochester, NY, USA. Bausch Health Companies Inc.(formerly Valeant Pharmaceuticals) owns Bausch & Lomb, but there was no mention of Bausch or Valeant on the product. There was a nice flexible black plastic case to hold and carry the lens, but mine had been soaked in so much perfumy disinfectant that it smelled like a tart’s handkerchief, and it was banished to the garage for cleaning.ASSESSMENT: This lens is just what the doctor ordered. I have been looking for a hand lens like this for years. Although I have a very nice jewelry loupe, medical specimens don’t like to be crushed by putting a lens on top of them, and biological specimens just fly or hop away when you stick your big face close to theirs. This lens focuses 2 inches away from your specimen and you can see a field about an inch wide, which is plenty to read small print. 3.5 X doesn’t sound like a lot of magnification, but I haven’t found myself needing any more than that.RECOMMENDATIONS: I use this simple lens a lot and I think you might, too. Works great for my older eyes. I must perform some fine detail work, and this loupe allows me to inspect tooling up close without removing them from machinery. Otherwise I would have to remove the tooling, then get under a microscope. If there were a version with a built in ring light it would be IDEAL!!.

I purchased this to replace one which was stolen.. This product works great for fine detail work such as circuit boards, inspection and reading fine print.

I recently bought a used one of these Bausch & Lomb 3.5x magnifiers and am very happy with it.The magnifier is big enough so you don't lose it easily and it can be held a distance away from the eye, unlike a loupe.I use it all the time to check measurements, view tool bit centering over scribed lines, and to read tiny print on tool bits.I used it yesterday as I plucked a fine sliver of aluminum from my finger.
