This little-known solo piano album by Herbie Hancock(b. 1940) was one of the first Direct-To-Disc recordings made in Tokyo on October 25 & 26, 1978 and previously available only as a limited-edition album in Japan.Hancock plays inventive versions of standards associated with Miles Davis plus four originals.This CD reissue adds three alternative takes of the standards and one of Hancock's originals, 'Harvest Time'.Superbly recorded with stunning clarity this neglected gem should be heard by all fans of solo piano jazz.Btw ~ On my copy track 10 should be titled 'Harvest Time' not 'Someday My Prince Will Come' and vice versa for track 11.

This is a sublime and masterly piano playing and I particularly like the eclectic Otani Blues track. This refers of course to the famous Tokyo hotel of the same name. I was slightly disappointed that there were alternate versions of all the tracks apart from that one.

When records as good as this 1978 recording do not get released for nearly thirty years outside of Japan, you can hardly wonder at the 1970's reputation as the decade that Jazz forgot. As far as I am aware, Hancock does not have a prolific record of solo piano offerings and this CD, excellently recorded despite it's age, demonstrates that this is something that he should do more to rectify. Had it had been released at the time, no doubt this is a record that would have acquired classic status. As someone who has tried to learn jazz piano, I feel that I am qualified to agree with everything that the other reviewer says, although I would add that the magic that is contained within this disc requires careful listening to fully appreciate. (Unlike Keith Jarrett who probably appeals as much to the non-musician and musician alike.) There is room in my CD collection for all types of pianists, yet Hancock is, for this reveiwer, the most technically accomplished and greatest of them all. The first half of the disc offers some reflective renditions of standards associated with Miles Davis and allows Hancock to explore his rich, harmonic palete. "My funny valentine" opens like a piece of 20th Century Classical music - no surpise really since Hancock is familiar with this repertoire. "Green Dolphin Street" demonstrates a simplification of the harmonic structure a la Coltrane, yet his right hand improvisations seem to explore every harmonic possibility. The control of dynamics is breath-taking. This is even more remarkable given that these tracks are all unedited. Elsewhere, a set of originals is no less involving, ending in some dirty blues playing. Although these tracks are all around the five minute mark, the pianist has carefully crafted them into perfectly contained performances that go well beyond the usual run around the block on the chord changes. Each composition , therefore, has it's own carefully considered architecture. This is the work of a true genius. At the end of the official release, this CD adds some alternative takes that give a more robust view of the standards that were probably considered contrary to the intended ambience of the original LP. Whereas alternative takes can often be little more that inferior renditions of the selected take, these offer a fascinating window into Hancock's improvisational process and are a valid addition. In conclusion then, this is a record that every pianist will want to own and will certainly continue to yield new gems with every listen. Absolutely fantastic.

Great CD....And in perfect condition

This album might be one of the more obscure outings from Herbie Hancock, but it must surely be amongst his best. Recorded direct to disc in 1979 for Japanese only release scores heavily in the all the ways that really mater. Firstly, the level of artistry could not be higher. Herbie plays this classy selection of ballads and own material with the touch and taste of a master. Every note is worth the playing and every note is given its due. No show boating, but plenty of melody and interesting musical asides that make for an absorbing and thought provoking listen. Secondly, the sound quality is of a kind that would keep just about every audiophile happy. It really does sound as if Herbie is in the room with you. Thirdly the choice of material is first rate. Great versions of ‘My Funny Valentine’ and ‘On Green Dolphin Street’ and and absolutely wonderful stomping funky blues in ‘Blue Otani’.Make no mistake, this is not bland dinner jazz noodling, this prime music making. Essential.

Herbie Hancock gehört fraglos zu den größten, zeitgenössischen Jazzpianisten. 1978 veröffentlichte der nunmehr 78-jährige das Album "The Piano", was in Verbindung mit dem Cover fast schon alles über diese Platte aussagt. Stripped down Jazz, ein Mann und sein Piano, nur sein Piano. Kein Tamtam, keine großen Bläsereinsätze, nur pure Pianomusik. Fantastisch gespielte Tracks, wie "My Funny Valentine", "On Green Dolphin Street" oder "Manhattan Island" bekommen hier ein sehr intimes Gewand übergestreift.Am Besten hört man die Platte an einem verkaterten/romantischen Sonntagmorgen oder beim Übergang von der Nacht in den neuen Tag, wenn die Dunkelheit draußen langsam heller wird.Musik kann so schön sein!

Ich weiß nicht, warum nur wenige Rezensenten wirklich die Musik hören wollen. Hancock pur - ungeachtet der tontechnischen Kinkerlitzchen ob direct oder nicht - zeigt was einen Weltklasse-Jazzpianisten ausmacht. Mit seiner Klangvorstellung im Kopf antizipiert der Mann sein Spiel bereits Takte im Voraus, dass man es erst nach dem x-ten Mal hinhören begreift. Von rhythmisch funkigen Varianten etwa in "Somday my Prince will come" bis hin zu genial modernisierenden Reharmonsierungen quer durch alle Songs, als hätten es die Komponisten nie anders gewollt und trotzdem unverkennbar jener Hancock, der gemeinsam mit Miles Davis in dessen berühmten Quintett, den Post-Bop Jazz bis an die Grenze zum nur mehr schwer vermittelbaren Freejazz ausgelotet hat.Hancock pur ist für Puristen gedacht, setzt ein bisschen Willen zum Verstehen voraus. Wer die Hürde überwindet - was gar nicht so schwer fällt - findet in diesen Aufnahmen Schätze, die man noch in hundert Jahren mit zustimmenden Nicken hören wird. Wer sich besonders für das Jazzpiano interressiert, wird an dieser Aufnahme nicht vorbeikommen.

Herbie's playing is topnotch. He always challenges convention. The album's choice of classic compositions could have used a little more lyricism to round out the cerebral blue offerings. Are we still in New York? -- in the heady metropolis of mixed feelings? Maybe. But the urban vibe coming out of his chords is either very late night, or the next morning in an unfamiliar town, some distance from the big party.

Je länger ich die CD höre umso begeisterter bin ich. Eine CD, die man sich wohl niemals überhören wird. Bedenkenlos spreche ich absolute Kaufempfehlung aus.

I like virtually everything Herbie has ever done. I could be his biggest admirer. Not this album however. He sounds either distracted, or less likely, he forgot how well he really plays. A major disappointment. 2 and a half stars

Was braucht man mehr? Herbie Hancock spielt ausgesuchte feine Jazz-tunes auf einem Steinway-Flügel... Alleine... Solo... Nur das Piano... Hammer. Wirklich. Gerade das "Direct-to-Disc"-Verfahren - d.h. keinerlei Abmischungen, pur, so wie es ist - macht diese CD meines Erachtens zu einem wirklich "Schatz" feiner Pianomusik. Gerne auch mal im Hintergrund laufen lassen oder verträumt zu hören. Alles möglich.Über die Qualitäten von Hancock braucht man wohl nichts zu sagen. Die dürfte wohl hinreichend bekannt sein. Dennoch muss man Hancocks Spiel hervorheben, die Interpretationen der z.T. sehr bekannte Stücke sind zumeist sehr intelligent, ausgewogen, nicht überfrachtet und dennoch "eindeutig Hancock"....Unbedingt kaufen!!! Vor allem für den Preis....

最初にレコードでThe Pianoを購入してから25年、日本版CD、今回のremaster版CDで3枚目の購入です。あれ、レコードは二枚買ったかな？まあ、いろいろなソロピアノのレコードはありますが、こんなに独創的な音が入っているものはありません。彼の指先から生み出される音の躍動と自在性、最高です。ハービーそのものです。こんな風に音を紡ぐことが出来たらいいな〜。楽しいだろうな〜。数ある彼のCDのなかで今も飽きもせずに延々聴いているのはこれだけです（ごめん）。前の日本版CDはレコードとほぼ同じ音でしたが、今回の版はテープのゆがんだ音も軽減されていて一番音は良いです。音圧もすこし上がっています。これだけでもRemaster版を購入する価値はあります。安い（笑）！さらに以前の解説書に原盤の故障でN.G. とされたという別takeが聞けます！私はこれを25年聞いてみたかったので、今回とても満足です。２つのtakeがこんなに違うとは思ってもみませんでした。そう、天才でしたね、彼は。でも一聴してselectされていた今までのtakeは原盤の故障ではなかったのだろうということが解りますね。最後に、CDのライナーを読むとこれって今まで日本だけでしか手に入らなかったのですねー。世界中でこれが手に入るようになったのはうれしい限りです。みんながこれを聴くことでピアノの音と弾くことのすばらしさを知って幸せになれるように心から願っています。

別テイクの入ってるこちらを選びましたが、音質は良くありませんでした。中音域の弱いタッチで弾く部分だけは音割れしませんが、それ以外はかなり音割れ、もしくは潰れた音です。原因が録音レベルが高いからか、調律が良くないからか微妙なとこですが、ソニーから出てる方も買ってみるつもりです。追記ソニーの方も購入して聴いてみましたが、音質に大佐ありませんだした。

とても美しい。１９７８年、東京で録音されたそうです。ハンコックのアルバムがあふれかえっているいるなか光をはなっています。個人的に記憶とかさなっている。

７０年代後半のキース　ジャレット、チック　コリアを中心とするソロピアノの流行の中、彼らとともに３大ピアニストと呼ばれていたハンコックは当時もう一つの流行であったクロスオーバー･ブーム(フュージョンという言葉が普及するちょっと前）の中で､主にエレクトリック　キーボードを演奏していました。ハンコックのジャズピアニストとしての名声は６０年代に確立したもので、VSOPでの演奏は当時の回顧という意味合いの強いものでした。当時、日本のファンの間では、ハンコックがソロピアノをやれば、すごいものになるという期待がありました。オスカー　ピータソンが「ハービーのソロを聞いてみたい。」と言っていたとか、まことしやかにささやかれていました。そんな時日本のCBSソニー(アメリカのコロンビアではありません)が来日に合わせて企画したのがこのアルバムです。蓋を開けるとどうだったかと言うと、期待して買った多くのファンはがっかりしたと聞きます。確かに、コンボ編成でのバッキングで限られたスペースを埋めていた華麗なフレーズは、自由なスペースの中では所在無く宙に浮き、指使いは迷い箸を想像させます。私はこれはこれで好きですけど･･･　たとえば、当アルバムの"SONRISA"という曲は、あのハンコック版ディスコアルバム｢フィーツ｣でボーカル付で"TRUST ME"という曲になっていたりします。どうせ企画ものだったら、ビル　エバンスの｢FROM LEFT TO RIGHT」みたいに、同じ曲をアコピとエレピ（フェンダーローズ）で演奏し、最後にストリングスまでつけてしまうというようなノリが欲しかったと思います。

リスナーにとっては期待はずれかもしれないけど、ピアノソロ勉強中の人にとってはなかなかイイのでは？　ソンリサは譜面も出てるのでモード奏法入門にはうってつけと思います。なにしろベースの音域までカヴァーするには、そうごちゃごちゃ音を入れられないんで。こんなふうにクリアーに弾く方法もあるさって。気に入ってます。

Absolutely beautiful music. This is just solo piano pieces by Herbie Hancock, so intimately done and delicately done that you just get lost in the music. I don't know that he ever did any album like this one. Four of the songs have two versions: My Funny Valentine, On Green Dolphin Street, Someday My Prince Will Come, Harvest Time. And I am so glad they put two versions of them on there because they are so gorgeous with beautiful variations between the two versions. The other three songs Sonrisa, Manhattan Island and Blue Otani are also great, wonderful and creative pieces. Blue Otani is more upbeat and adds a nice variation to the other songs. But this is just one of the albums to listen to over and over and over again, either by yourself when you're in a contemplative mood or with your sweetheart.
