Gorgeous Toy
I know this is aimed at babies but I bought this for my elderly mother who has dementia, and she is in love with it! Have looked at similar toys for a while but chose this one as she always loved cats and Vtech is a trusted brand. Not to mention it looks so cute! It is a bit pricey, but for all the different functions it has I'd say it's worth it. Only had it a few days and it's already an essential part of her routine, really helps her settle and calm down when she is stressed. She is mesmerised by the cat's movement and lights, and it's fur is so soft to touch. She likes to sit with it on her lap and feel the movement of the head and tummy, like it's a real live pet moving in her lap, I think it reminds her of her cats that used to fall asleep on her. Great that volume is adjustable so it's not too loud so won't disturb others, her favourite is the nature sounds which I almost found myself drifting off to! I can imagine it being just as soothing for a baby as well as anyone with special needs or even anxiety/insomnia. Bare in mind the motor is quite loud which doesn't bother mum, but might not be good for a baby or kid trying to sleep. However you can turn the movement off and I think mum quite enjoys the sort of white noise the motor makes. 5 stars!

Great for dementia, cats and insomnia too
My mother has dementia and wanted a cat that purred but “a cute one, not a normal one”. This fit the bill. It is excellent for calming her and helping her to sleep as well as being a delightful mood lifter. I had to buy a second one because the cat fell in love with it too and as soon as the music starts it rushes to bed to cuddle with it. We used to foster orphaned and abandoned kittens and this could be excellent for them too under supervision. As someone with CPTSD and insomnia I have found it calming too and holding it while it moves does regulate your breathing, calming you and helping you to sleep. So I might need one for everyone in the house. The removable cover on the body for washing is excellent. I wish the head covering was removable too. It gets cuddled by muddy paws and sticky hands so easy cleaning is invaluable.

Cute baby toy, but not so sure it’s suitable to sooth a baby’s sleep
This is a review of the VTech Baby Calming Purrs Kitten. This is a cute and unusual baby toy, and would make a nice gift for someone with a new baby. In terms of it being suitable to sooth a baby’s sleep I am not so sure. When it arrives, the toy is in demonstration mode, so that you can push the buttons on the front and see what happens. In this mode, it is at full volume (presumably so that you can hear it in a noisy shop). Once you take it out of the packaging, you switch it off to stop the demo mode, put some decent batteries in (3 x AA) and you are good to go. Surprisingly, there are no operating instructions. From what I have figured out, there are three modes selectable from the on/off switch: 1. Music with cat breathing and purring, 2. Nature sounds, and 3. Music (cat doesn’t breathe or purr in modes 2 & 3). The other buttons allow you to change the volume, turn the light function on & off, and start whatever mode you have selected (same as pressing the moon on the cat’s tummy). Pressing the star on the cat’s tummy starts a timer (15, 30 or 45 minutes). In all these modes the cat’s head randomly turns from side to side. I think a baby or toddler is likely to be fascinated by this as a toy when wide awake, but in terms of helping them to fall asleep and stay asleep, there are things that I think would not help. The movement of the cat’s head is quite sudden and almost violent. I think this would disturb a sleeping child if they are in contact with it. Also, some of the sleep sounds are (to me), not exactly sleep inducing. For example, the sudden hooting of an owl is quite scary, and other sounds just don’t seem appropriate for a baby (e.g. crackling fire, arctic wind with dogs barking in the distance, waves crashing on a beach). The sounds change randomly so you can’t select or block any of them. If I was using this with a baby, I think I’d stick to the music, and place it near to them but not actually in the cot, and definitely not in contact with them.
