For the price, this is an excellent box. I use it for my Apple Ultra watch bands and a few other items.The wood itself is very attractive, the burl has a lot of“pop”. This size was ideal for my use.Thuya burl has a unique odor, similar to western cedar. It’s sort of a weird odor but it’s a normal characteristic of this wood species. When you unpack this box, the unusual wood odor is normal.Be aware that because this box has a cedar like odor inside, anything you put into it, like Apple Watch bands will also smell like cedar. I found that out a few days after the box arrived.I do a lot of woodworking and have used Thuya burl for a Japanese knife handle and when it’s sanded, the smell is very pungent. The saw dust can be irritating to some but as solid wood it’s fine.The high gloss finish is well done. The inside of the box is unfinished, hence the wood odor so be aware of the cedar scent.The thin lid hinges appear to be dark brass.For the money, this is a top rate accessory box. Hope that helps.

I used it as display on my coffee table

I bought the medium to put on top of my regular sized jewelry box to hold the pieces I wear most frequently. I was worried about the smell, the grain, the hinges, and if it would be sticky as one review mentioned. The one I received is beautiful. The hinges are fine and it isn't sticky or tacky at all. It has a slight smell, almost a combination of cedar and eucalyptus. I expected this as burlwood has an odor, as most natural wood does. I am VERY sensitive to smells, but this one doesn't bother me. Just be aware that burlwood does have a distinctive scent. Also pay attention to the dimensions. Mine is exactly as I expected the size to be, so I am completely satisfied, but I clearly read the measurements before purchasing. Based on the one I received, I would highly recommend these, and they would make a great gift or a holder for a gift of jewelry or a watch. I placed a couple bracelets and a key fob inside for scale. I have a small collection of little boxes and am thinking about purchasing the smallest size to hold a ring or two or earrings.

This box has exceeded my expetations. I got it to hold knicknacks on my large coffee table. It's well made and fits my needs perfectly. The only problem is that it's much prettier than my coffee table.

This was given as a first communion gift, to house a cross and chain. My grandson just loved it! It really is beautiful wood, and a solid box.

At this price point, I did not have high expectations. I honestly expected it to be veneer.But as you can see in my pics its solid burl. The only side that is not solid burl is the bottomwhere a straight grain board is used. The top of the box has a slight bevel which i hard tosee from my pics. Look at the caliper shot and see how thick these burl walls are.This box is impeccably constructed. The quality of the burls is first rate. I even think thatthe wood has been stabilized, (based on the weight of the box). Yet another unexpectedand HUGE plus, as the whirlier and more interesting the burl, the weaker it is, stabilizationis expensive, Im going to order a couple more as business gifts, as these are one of a kindexhibition / heirloom grade boxes. Let me also make one more recommendation, I wouldsuggest the designs without heavy inlay. You can put inlays on anything, they are a nice wayto jazz up a plain design, but now that i know the quality of the craftsmanship and the materialsused, im glad I did order one of the busy designs, it would have detracted from aesthetics.To place my rave review in proper context, consider that I just checked my amazon accountand shockingly I placed 132 orders in the last year, and I cannot recall the last time I wrote areview of anything.

This was a gift for my mother for her 84th birthday. She keeps a few sentimental items in it on her dresser where she can see it and admire it when she gets up and goes to bed. Thanks!
