They do a good job trapping sediment and junk
I use a fresh package every 3 - 4 weeks. My kitties tend to drop bits of dry food into the well when they are drinking so I get a fair amount of sediment. I have used other fountains but I love my current fountain (all dishwasher safe parts) and these filters help to keep it sparkling clean. I rinse them out when I am changing the water and putting the fountain parts in the dishwasher (not the motor, of course). I never can remember if there is a distinct order on the round ones so those are placed haphazardly, but they still work. Well worth the money. I would not use a fountain waterer without them.
