Product Description WHAT IS VG10 DAMASCUS STEEL? An advancement of laminated or stacked steel, a similar technique in which steels with varying carbon content are combined to achieve the desired blend of hardness and toughness. This lamination process, in which different types of steel come together to form a pattern visible on the surface of the finished blade, forms the basis for pattern welding. A VG10 steel core is forged with 33 layers of Damascus steel on each side. The steel is laminated in the form, with the steel layers and the steel core sandwiched together. After a high-temperature heat treatment exceeding a thousand degrees and a forging process at minus 100 degrees Celsius, it appears exotic and downright splendid. Damascus steel knives are stronger than their historical counterparts as they contain fewer impurities and consist of homogeneous layers. The blade's sharpness can reach up to HRC 60 ± 2. HOW TO IDENTIFY REAL AND FAKE DAMASCUS? In some rare cases, an attempt is made to pass off normal stainless steel without layers as Damascus by laser-printing a pattern on the blade. These are fairly easy to identify because they either do not look like Damascus or the pattern could easily rub off. Real Damascus is inherent in the steel itself, but fake Damascus is only a facade. You can use sandpaper to achieve the satin look. When it's nicely polished, etch it with ferric chloride or hydrochloric acid. If the Damascus pattern re-emerges, it's genuine.
