It does not have a built-in battery. It is powered by a USB connection from an external power supply.

How does it work with a data simm card?

No, it's is connected to an existing internet supply by means of ethernet or wifi. Can either be used as a client, range extender or access point. You need a dongle or modem/router to take a sim card.

So would this work when camping? Where there isnt a wifi connection or in the woods for example?

It would not work without a wifi signal

so does this have to be connected to a third party or can i use this without reliance on anyone or any provider?

No third party needed - it is a wireless router, supporting multiple providers - works well for my astrophotography as the mini computer I use didn't have a strong enough wifi to connect to my main router in the house - the portable router connects them perfectly.
