Calibration sucks. Spend more and get a better product from APERA.
First and foremost, they claim the unit is calibrated from the factory, which is a lie. Mine gave readings all over the place from 6 to 8 pH in distilled water. Second, they give you calibrating "powder", which has to be mixed with ionized water in order to be effective as a calibrating tool. Completely useless. I gave up on this unit and ordered a pH meter from APERA, which included calibration SOLUTION, not powder, which made setting up and taking accurate measurements quick and easy. And they DIDN'T lie to me about the unit being pre-calibrated from the factory - the manual says calibrate before you use it, and store it with some of the calibration solution in the cap to maintain sensitivity.Either way, the ease of use on the APERA unit blew this piece of crap away. I threw it in the garbage, where it belongs.

I've been wanting a digital pH meter for ages!
I hear a lot of my fellow sourdough bakers talking about starter going acidic on them. I have been wanting to get a baseline pH reading on my starter (which is still happy, healthy and productive) so I'll be on alert if it starts to get acidic on me.This digital pH meter for food, sourdough, cheese, etc. fits the bill to a T and I'm very happy to have it.I did a hasty check of the pH of my starter this afternoon and got a reading of 7.06. To the best of my recollection from high school science class, that is "neutral" and I'm presuming it is within the desirable range for sourdough starter. I'm going to check this from time to time to see if I notice any substantial variations on this reading.I'm also an avid gardener so the two separate probes on this pH meter really appealed to me. I'm going to mark one as "soil only" for use here in my own garden beds and also in the beds of the community garden program that I support to help feed the hungry in our community. If the pH of your soil is not right -- regardless of whatever amendments you might incorporate -- your garden will not thrive.IMPORTANT WORD OF CAUTION:Though it's not mentioned in the descriptive text for this item, there is mention of using this meter in the process of canning food within the graphics that accompany this listing.I do NOT -- repeat, do NOT -- recommend relying on this or any other pH meter to determine how one should or could preserve food through home canning. That is dangerous and potentially deadly! The only way to SAFELY preserve food through canning is to follow the specific directions and instructions of the National Center for Home Food Preservation (NCHFP), Ball preserving or its Canadian "cousin", Bernardin. There is much more to safely preserving food than just checking its pH. Don't let "canning rebels" tell you otherwise. The health and potentially even the lives of your family are at stake. Botulism is nothing to mess around with! Don't risk your family's welfare by following so-called advice from random people with smartphones who post contradictory information on the internet. You can always rely on the NCHFP, Ball and Bernardin for SAFE canning directions and advice.

Poor quality and very unstable
Don’t really care for product. Can’t use on hot food. Instructions are pretty worthless. The reading is so up and down. Not too functional as I’d rate the quality as poor.

It works, but the instructions are lacking
I use this meter to keep track of the pH when dying yarn and fabrics. It works well out of the box and I compared the reading to another meter I have. The readings are very close to one another so while there is a margin of error, it is acceptable for my purposes. The calibration instructions are severely lacking, however, with the instructions being identical for each of the three calibration test pH pots. That might be okay, but the unit doesn't follow along with the instructions. Once you calibrate the first time, it doesn't change for the other calibrations. I ended up resetting to factory default and it worked okay again. The unit works well, but you might want to find instructions online or somewhere.

Not accurate and disappointing
Having an acurate PH reader is very important to me because I make my own soaps, creams, cosmetic creams for my household. I spent more on this one because I hoped it would provide a higher level of acuracy, but it didnt. The reviews are mostly superficial, in my opinion, as they do not go to real accuracy of the product. Just sticking the stick in your product and getting a reading is not enough. That just tells you the battery works. Understand this. I can understand if its a little off, but come on! Such a waste of time. So disappointed:(

good for sourdough
Making sourdough bread apparently requires a lot of chemistry and I got the pH meter for my mom in her new quest to bake sourdough from scratch. She said it seems accurate, as she's compared it in liquids with pH strips.
