Can it hold a 55 inch tv

It can hold a 55-inch television on it but only if your tv's legs are not all the way on the end. I have a 55 inch on mine and the tv hangs over a few inches.

I want to put my snake tank on this, what is the weight limit?

The weight limit for the table top is 40 lbs.

can I put a 43" tv on a stand that says it accommodates a 42" tv?

YES. I HAVE A 55 INCH TV ON MINE

What are the dimensions of the side shelves? I am looking for it to hold two speakers?

Both middle shelf openings are 19 5/8" wide between posts. Middle shelf itself is 23 1/2" long, but the posts eat up some of that length. The top middle shelf opening height is 6 7/16". Bottom middle shelf opening height is 6 3/8". The space height below the bottom shelf is 1 7/16". Each side speaker opening (so called) are 13 9/16" tall by 8 1/8" wide between side post and middle shelf. I pressed my top post end caps into the top pretty tight, so my height clearances would be the minimum, however it still wouldn't vary more than 1/16" to 1/8" difference on the height measurements.
