a fascinating study
This is a reasonably interesting short book. It's well written, and offers an insightful exploration of street prostitution in the city of Glasgow in the early 1990's. It's obvious that the authors are knowledgeable on the subject matter, and they seek to examine the views and opinions of both women (who are paid for sex) and men (who pay for sex), discussing the conditions and circumstances within which prostitution occurs. This book presents ethnographic research findings - after the two authors spend 3 years in the field, talking to prostitutes and their clients. On the whole, I found their study to be engaging. Yet it's a rather short affair ... and the result is far from thorough. We gain bits and pieces of information ascertaining to a small number of prostitutes. And, for some reason, a lot of attention is dedicated to HIV. Even the authors openly state that perceptions regarding HIV among British street prostitutes are typically wrong - with the problem massively exaggerated. Very few UK prostitutes are HIV+. As such, I just couldn't see the need to dedicate so much space - within a very tiny book - to this issue. For anyone interested in the conditions of life endured by the women who are paid to have sex on the streets of Glasgow, I recommend this book. Had it been a couple of hundred pages longer, allowing for a more comprehensive study, I'd award more stars.
