Really disappointed in Black and Decker this time
I expected more from B&D on this. I have one of their portable room air conditioners, that really isn't all that portable as it must be connected to a window vent, but man that thing will freeze you out of the room it's in. I had high hopes for this little one, even knowing it would work better being vented out. I had a window for that. I don't know if I had one with a defective fan or what, but when sitting right in front of it you could feel almost no cool air. And I'm talking knees touching the front of the air conditioner. It was blowing some cool air but only a few inches out. We even had the heat exhaust tubes out a window directly behind it, all openings to the window sealed up. No problem with hot air from the exhaust in the room, and there WAS hot air exchanging, so I assume the condenser part was working ok, just didn't have a strong enough fan or something. Decided not to try another given other reviews. Am returning.

Perfect *Personal* Air Conditioner, not Room Air Conditioner
I bought this for my goddaughter, her family doesn't like to use central air until it's like 90 degrees outside. I can judge all I want but I'm not the one paying their electric bill. This is perfect for her, placed near her desk/gaming station, she can have Ice Cold air keeping her cool, at a very affordable price. The EPA sticker on the box says $36 to run it for 8 hours/day for 3 months. It's only 300 Watts. Her PC consumes more power. There is nothing out there like this device, I'm honestly tempted to get another as I'm afraid they won't be around if and when I need one in the future. I love that it does not need a window connection. I tested it myself when it first arrived, which was way faster than Amazon estimated. Placed 3 feet away, it was able to keep me very comfortably cold in a room that was 80 degrees. It produces a nice cool breeze, very enjoyable. Even my cat liked it, she took my spot as soon as I walked away ha. And I have high standards, I keep my home at 70 degrees throughout the summer. And I didn't even connect the exhaust hoses. The exhaust is not that hot either. It's not loud at all, honestly more quiet than some desk fans set to max. And that's how you have to look at this air conditioner, it's a desk fan that has a compressor and refrigerant. It actually produces cold air, unlike virtually anything else in its class, i.e. fans/evaporators, swamp cooler, etc, but it can only cool a personal space, not a room. Great if you like to lounge on the couch all day or work from home and don't have A/C or don't want to run it for the whole house or room. It's easy to move around, has wheels and a handle, kinda heavy though. Also love the size, it's very compact, it's the smallest A/C I've ever seen. Which also means the water tray is small. I live in a dry climate so it shouldn't be annoying but I imagine if I had this in somewhere like San Francisco it would need to be emptied almost daily if you ran it all day long. The champagne color looks better in real life as well, more of a deeper gold tone, kinda a 60's vibe. Anyway that's my love letter to this PERSONAL air conditioner lol. It fit my niche need very well. If you need to cool an area larger than 6-8 feet, look elsewhere. It's like comparing watching a video on your phone vs a TV, both have their time and place. Update 8/4/2026: I ended up buying another one for myself a couple months ago. I have been using it daily. I use it to augment my central air and get instant cooling when I get home or when my family doesn't want the rest of our home to be as cold. Also helps keep me cold while I'm sleeping, acts really nice as just a fan as well. Totally silent in that mode and perfect height for a bed. I can easily move it from room to room and never use the hose attachment, the exhaust just doesn't ever get that hot. I've been told my goddaughter uses hers every night when she goes to sleep. The area we live in has been staying over 80 degrees all night this summer. It's nice knowing she has something to keep her comfortable.

Literal cold air fan, not room air conditioner
To clarify I am reviewing the model number BP01PT "3 in 1 mini portable air conditioner". It's the one in a weird champaign color. I was looking for a portable air conditioner for a very specific use case. I needed something that would blow cold air in a very small area while not necessarily needing to vent the hot air out a window. Alas, these types of devices do exist, and why I wanted one. Think of a garage space where you need to keep the door open to vent fumes, but you can't have any conventional window / mini split air conditioner running. This type of device is perfect for those scenarios, keeping a very specific small area (basically person) cool. You could also brute force a typical portable air conditioner to do the same thing I suppose, but then you're running a lot of extra electricity for that. They're also a lot bigger than this unit. I was also looking for a device like this that could run on a portable battery as well - specifically a camping battery that is readily available nowadays. Unfortunately, the results of my testing equipment show wattage usage falls outside the range of smaller batteries and needs a mid-size one to function. So, with the unit on cold mode (high or low), it runs on about 310 watts continuous. It also has a peak 2 second starting requirement of 1217 watts. These two numbers eliminate a lot of "entry" level camping batteries that can do 600 watts continuous, but only peak at 1200. Typically, those units have sensitive electronics that will immediately shut down the battery if it's even 5 watts over the max draw - which is understandable. Most batteries should handle the 310 watts continuous, but you're going to need the peak / surge wattage to be above 1217 (ideally 1300 or better). This device does not magically pass the laws of thermodynamics. It will not cool a room unless you specifically vent the hot air outside via the included hoses. But even then, this was never designed to cool a room in the first place. Think of it as a very specific fan that guarantees cold and dry air up to 6 feet in front of it. It may also work as a tent air conditioner, but keep in mind its rated for 95F max and only has 1000BTU of cooling power. Since it runs at 310 watts, we know that the EER rating is a pathetic 3.22 (1000 / 310) This device suits my needs perfectly for what I'm trying to achieve. But it's a very narrow use case, and I know that. If you're looking to do something similar, I would say "go for it". But chances are, there's probably better solutions if you have the space or know how to get there. The lone saving grace for this unit in a general sense, is that for cooling literally one single person in a room, 310 watts isn't too bad in the grand scheme of things. Even the most efficient small room window air conditioner runs at 550 watts, and they require (you guessed it) a window to work. You also can't move them around, and this one is portable.

Portable AC unit.
I love, black and decker products, and I love the fact that you did not need a window to vent this product, but it just did not cool an extremely small room. The size room that I have is even smaller than what is stated on the item description. I bought this item specifically because it did not need to vent, and the fact that it was portable, it was small enough to fit into a very small room. But with living in Florida, the room stayed extremely hot, even with this portable AC unit being turned on the highest setting. Thank you

Good for specific use cases
Not the strongest AC but works great for my use case, I have it setup in my SUV with a jackery and solar panels and it keeps the car cool on the hot summer days. Exhaust vent hoses are 3" and it requires 1200w to start the compressor but drops to 300w when running

Doesn’t cool.
Hardly even cools a small space unfortunately. For the price paid you’d expect it to work better but unfortunately it works about as good as my fan does, just it’s costing more in electric to run it. Once the hottest part of the day comes around it doesn’t cool down anything. The size is very convenient and the look of the unit is very nice and not an eye sore but it doesn’t cool as expected which is really disappointing

It cant cool a 200sq foot room. Should be marketed as a cooling fan.
The unit does produce some cold air but calling it windowless etc is marketing. If you let it blow out the warm air into the same room it is a push at best. I have tried as you can see in the photo to blow out the air thru a window in my 200 sq foo gaming room. I have also tried the unit in another position and putting the exhaust hoses blowing out into a hallway. It is essentially a $250 fan. Another issue is the low AC setting does not lower the fan speed ie make it quieter. Not sure who would ever put the low setting on as the high setting does not even produce enough cool air to make it worth it. Black and Decker will regret producing this product. I will be returning the unit. Was really hoping this would be my answer.
