Review: A good inexpensive option for sharpening plane irons - This sharpener is like many others you can find on desertcart. I suspect the manufacturing country of origin is the same one as the one so much other stuff imported into the USA comes from as it is as clone of the dozen others offered. I sharpen a lot of plane irons and have been using this style of guide for as long time and go through a couple every 18 months or so. I've owned Atlin branded guides in the past and found them to be accurate and reasonably well made. Sharpening angle is determined simply by measuring the distance from the leading edge of the guide to the end of the cutting end of the blade. I have placed several graduated marks on my workbench to facilitate the measuring but I mostly use 25 degrees, standard for plane irons. Using this guide, and after flattening the back side. I can get a polished bevel in about 10 minutes going from 80 - 8000 grit. It holds the angle as well as the blade firmly with little or no "slop"...except. As the guide is used, the metal cylindrical wheel that does all the work wears on the inside where the threaded shaft passes through. After about 50 - 75 sharpenings the guide will begin to wobble and it you are not careful, your bevel will not be square with the side of the iron, a somewhat important factor for plane irons. After about 100 sharpenings the wobble becomes pronounced and the guide has to be replaced as there is no repair for the problem. I've found this to be a characteristic of all of the guides in this price range. For the $15 or so that they cost, it's worth it to just toss and replace a couple every once in a while, usually about 18 months or so and I sharpen a lot of blades with them. If you are a casual user the life expectancy should be much, much longer. For me, this is a good option and Atlin is a good price and comparable to any other out there. I like that they follow up on the sale which indicates to me that they will back the product no matter where it's made. I recommend them.
Review: It works good but does require a little work - I have been needing a honing guide to touch up my chisels. Not wanting to spend a lot of money on one right now, I found and bought this one. I like that this one is small in size but still pretty stable while using. Setting up the right angle for your chisels takes a few minutes to get right. Holding the chisel in place, then having to tighten with a screwdriver leaves room for movement of the chisel and then you're starting over setting it up. A small knob to tighten would help with that. Once set, it's easy to use but also easy to get wrong. Keeping good even pressure gives a good result. I'm just using a basic honing stone at the moment but this can be used on other honing surfaces. One reason I got this one. After using, I can definitely tell a difference in the sharpness of the chisel so at the end, it's worth it to me. I do plan on getting a better version on down the road but for now, this one gives a good result and I'm happy with it.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Well worth what I paid
*by D***N on July 28, 2023*

I've been sharpening knives, chisels, plane blades by hand for years, but after a recent run in with a hidden nail ruined the iron in my jack plane, I decided to pony up all of fifteen dollars to make the grunt work of grinding a new edge a bit more straightforward. Well, let me tell you, I wish I'd just had this thing for years instead. Maybe I got lucky, but my guide holds the iron well and it is nice a square. I'd already squared up the edge manually before I got started with this and it kept it dead on the entire time. You still need to hold the iron and the guide with even pressure from both hands. I more or less hold it the same way I would if I were hand sharpening, except I press into the guide a bit to hold that perfect angle. Then, my final passes are a little bit of pressure on the right for a few strokes, then the same on the left, just to feather in a camber. I took my poor banged up plane iron from a dented mess to a mirror shine that can pop arm hair off in perhaps an hour of grinding and polishing. I also used it, FYI, for the chip breaker, which suffered a bit of damage as well. It's pretty easy to just put that in the guide lightly, and visually inspect the angle it sits at to get it right. Since it isn't hardened steel, this went super fast, and my plane was up and running quick. Now, I'm going around seeing if I 'need' to resharpen any chisels or anything, because I'm so happy with the edge on this iron. Frankly, there is no badge or medal for doing this stuff by 'hand', and if a simple guide like this can improve speed and accuracy, it should be a no-brainer. I very much recommend it.
