Marjorie Prime (TCG Edition)

This is quite a fine play, from standpoint of language, plot, characterization. I believe it to be a bit "edgy" for standard community theatre, but it was thought-provoking and very true--not really science fiction--but certainly a believable projection into the scary potential of technology to "improve" the human condition.

I enjoyed the progression and was surprised with outcome. Gripping emotions with real life feel. Fiction often predicts future technology.

A beautiful tone poem that employs a Black Mirror/Twilight Zone device to questions of mortality and existence. It also evokes Ray Bradbury's humanism in the midst of the fantastic.

It's a really lovely play. The story asks wonderful questions regarding memory and why it is important to remember the bad a long with the good.

This play speaks in a spare, but profound way, about the nature of relationships, memory, human frailty, and artificial intelligence. Don't neglect to see the film...magnificent performances!

本年11月に新国立劇場で本作品の公演があるとのことで，戯曲を読んでおきたかったのですが，2014年初演ですので邦訳版はなく，英語版で読んでみました．70ページ程度の戯曲でそんなに時間をかけずに読むことができます．ジャンルとしては家庭劇ですので，難しい単語は使われていませんが，そのニュアンスをどう捉えて日本語にするかは簡単ではないと思います．　登場人物はMarjorie（85歳），その娘Tess（55歳），Tessの夫Jon（55歳）と，Marjorieの夫Walter（実はすでに亡くなっている若き日の本人を模したアンドロイドで，35歳代前半）の4人です．場所は米国東部の海岸に近い町，時はWalterが1965年頃の生まれですので，2055年頃と推定されます．　物語の骨子は，認知能力に衰えが見えてきたMarjorieに人生の残りの時間を幸せに過ごしてもらおうと，子供たちがアンドロイド会社に彼女の話し相手としてWalterを製作してもらうのですが，その会話からからMarjorieおよび一家の過去の日々が浮かび上がってくるという興味深い設定になっています．最近までラブレターを送り続けていた彼女の昔の恋人が元世界ランキング8位のプロテニス選手だったと本人も周囲もそう言っているのですが，実はカレッジのテニス選手で，石積み職人であったなどという少々しみじみとするエピソードもあり，タイトルにある“Prime”というのは，本書ではアンドロイドのことを意味するのですが，このあたりまで読んできて，タイトルを“マージョリーの青春”と訳したくなりました．　ところが，最後に“どんでん返し”（この内容は述べないのがエチケットでしょう）があり，よく考えれば意味はあるのですが，（映画“猿の惑星”の自由の女神像のように）直接にドンと心に響くものではなく，このあたりの演出はかなり難しいのではないかと思います．
