Easy, inexpensive way to set fork oil level
I just rebuilt the forks on my bike. I was on the fence whether to buy this tool or not-- I figured I'd improvise something when the time came to set the fork oil level. Then I saw that this kit was available for around $12 and thought about how much screwing around I'd end up doing to cobble together something with the junk I had laying around. Let's just say that it didn't take long for me to cough up the money and buy the kit. This kit is nothing special-- a plastic syringe, a steel tube with oil level heights marked on the side, and a stopper clamp that holds the tube at the correct height. But the value of not having to replicate it from improvised parts (or worse, buying a bunch of stuff to do it yourself) far outweighs the cost of the kit. You're paying for convenience, and it's well worth it.In my case, I decided to set the fork oil level to 140mm, which is just a bit more oil than the factory spec of 149mm. I installed the clamp at the 140 mark, placed it at the mouth of the fork tube, and pulled back the plunger. It takes a bit of force to suck the oil out because it is viscous and the suction tube is small, but in a few seconds I had the oil level set correctly. Rinse and repeat for the other tube. Both forks were done in less than a minute. You can (usually) do this with the forks installed on the bike and the front end jacked up in the air, but I did it with the forks removed completely since I was rebuilding them.On my bike, the oil level is set with the springs out and the fork fully collapsed. Make sure that you compress the fork up and down a few times to flush oil into all the passages of the damper assembly before you set the level. Also make sure the forks are standing vertically when you do it, not at an angle.I plan to change the oil on my forks regularly (unlike the original owner, who probably never touched it once). I may also play with different weight oils to see how the bike feels in the corners and over bumps. Having this tool in my box will make this part of it just a little more convenient.
