Review: Avermedia Live Gamer Portable - the one to beat! - I had been using the Elgato Game Capture HD to record my gameplay and commentary videos for YouTube. Some games worked OK, others would continually give me a black screen that would flash on the gameplay monitor which made it impossible to make a video that didn't have me stopping and waiting for the black screen to go away or flat out getting killed. I was well aware of the advanced tab and tried every last combination to rid myself of this problem, to no avail. The problem appeared to be game specific with some games working fine and others giving me the black screen. Honestly it wasn't worth it to keep fiddling with the Elgato. I was about to look at the Hauppauge when I ran across the LGP and decided to give it a try. I got the Live Gamer Portable, unboxed it and decided to try out the PC-Free recording first since that was the simplest thing to set up and didn't require me to move the laptop and everything else into the room that I record in. Setup was a breeze. 3 wires, turn on the system, start playing and hit the button on the top. (Make sure to format the SD card to FAT32 so it actually works). I decided to try the game that was giving me the endless Black screen issues on the Elgato as my test recording. Everything worked without a hitch. No black screens, no lag, no problems at all. I did several recordings of 15-20 minutes and then took the SD card out, plugged it into my laptop slot and viola - the video was there and looked great. Next I decided to bring the laptop in and setup for recording with commentary to see how that worked. Setup was simple, just like the Elgato. Just flip the switch on the LGP from PC-Free to PC capture, start the software and you are ready to go. I did have to play with the level of the microphone versus the game volume to get it just right, but that only took about 10 minutes of fiddling. Once everything was set I saved the profile and use that for my commentary videos. One thing I will point out comparing the Elgato to the LGP - the LGP does all of the work for you and uses a lot less system resources than the Elgato when recording on the PC. I don't use a top of the line laptop to record and with the Elgato I had to record at a max of 720p at the lowest quality settings in order to not get frame drops. Using the exact same laptop and the LGP I am able to record at 60fps and at the highest quality settings without frame drops or lag. The Elgato has a very noticeable lag from the game monitor to what you are seeing in the preview window of the software on your PC. If you are not careful and don't wait for the system to catch up, you can lose a couple of seconds of your recording and cut off the end of your commentary. The LGP does not have the lag issues, probably because the capture device does all the conversion right there before it hits your PC. With the Elgato, you have to wait for the system to convert the video and if your system isn't very powerful, you will have to wait for the conversion to finish before you record again or risk frame drops and messed up audio sync. With the LGP, what goes to your computer is the finished video, no waiting for conversion and no drain on system resources. A couple of other things which make the LGP a better device: You have the choice of recording your commentary as a separate audio file. While this doesn't seem like a big deal, if you decide your commentary wasn't that great and that you would rather just put up the gameplay video, you will have to re-record or spend a lot of time editing out your commentary in another piece of software. With the LGP, you just throw away the commentary file and use the video without having to do any more work. That's a real win! If you don't want to do the commentary as a separate file with the LGP you also have the option to go ahead and record it as one file, just like the Elgato does. The big difference is that you have a choice as to how you want to record your commentary. You don't risk having to re-record or spend time editing out bad commentary. PC-free recording is a huge advantage, especially if you either don't have a pc near your gaming station or if you just want to take the device to a friend's house to do some recording. Add to all of that the fact that you can put the device on your PC and record to you SD card without using system resources while PC gaming and you just have another plus that the Elgato can't match. For me, the LGP is the superior device. It gives me more options as to how I am going to record. It allows me to record PC-Free, even if I am gaming on the PC itself, which allows me to save system resources. The LGP fixed the black screen issue and the software that does the recording on your PC gives you more options as to how to record your commentary. IMHO the LGP is the device to get. The only thing I would like to see updated would be a change to the RECentral software that allows you to setup the system to mute or reduce the game volume while you are talking. This would save some time in setup for users who don't want to mess with adjusting the commentary volume and gameplay volume so that both can be heard. Other than that, the product works flawlessly right out of the box.
Review: Versatile, Easy to use & Great Quality. - The AVERmedia Live Gamer Portable is an amazing piece of equipment that takes video capture on multiple platforms to a whole new level with ease. This device provides a simple means of recording video on multiple platforms at the literal touch of a button. Either through a personal computer or through a video-gaming console, it will capture video with excellent quality and make it simple using its PC-Free mode, allowing people to record from a device anywhere they please. For competitive gaming, like fighting games, MMOs, and combat simulators/First-Person Shooters, there's no other device on the market that can match the simple and effective design of the Gamer Portable. This is especially true for competitive tournament players and organizers who want to easily record matches either on or off stream. While having many strong facets, the LGP's main strengths are in its versatility, ease of use, and video quality. Versatility 10/10 The Live Gamer Portable has a wide range of uses and platforms that it can provide content for. Computers and popular gaming consoles like the Playstation 3 or the Wii U can use the LGP to record matches. In big competitions, many matches may go unnoticed or recorded off the live stream. A Live Gamer Portable will allow more people to engage or support events with a touch of a button. We've managed to take it literally everywhere as a stand-alone recording device from my place to local bars where we play games. Even though you need to use a different method to capture video from the PS3, the included component video adapter solves that problem and lets me use my HDMI cable to record and play seamlessly. You can cut files at the appropriate time using the button on the top which allows you to control the amount of footage you take. In my opinion, no other stand-alone recording device matches the Live Gamer Portable in giving its user options and flexibility. Here's an example of a match in the fighting game, The King of Fighters XIII, I recorded at our local bar: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQJNOFTuBEY&feature=youtu.be Ease of Use 10/10 AVERmedia has created a device that's revolutionary, compact, and simple. For video game capturing, there's not a product out on the market that's more user friendly. Once you have an SD Card, you're ready to record! As mentioned before, it can be used for any video gaming system and the PC. You can stream matches live with a PC or record them all without a PC with very little setup. The package also includes streaming software like RECentral and a 3-month subscription Xsplit Broadcaster which includes a lot more personalized features for streaming. Using the PC-Free Mode, you can start and stop recording whenever you want. It's very simple to set up, but it's very easy to record. With the start and stop button at the top of the device, it tells you when it's recording, not recording, low on space in the SD card, and when there's a problem with a set of easy to remember flashing patterns. For competitive video game tournaments, organizers can record matches without having to care about compatibility to systems or lengthy set up time. Quality 9/10 The AVERmedia Live Gamer Portable provides exceptional quality. Although you do not have access to 1080p through the PC-Free mode, it allows 720p which is still very high quality for having no connection to a computer. Using a PC, the full effect of HD video quality can be experienced making streaming a snap and providing the best visual experience for users and viewers. In video listed in the Versatility portion, we recorded those matches just using the LGP. No pixilation or frames skipped. The Gamer Portable performed flawlessly and provided clear footage. It's one of the best video capture devices for quality on the market, but certainly edges over the competition for the fact it can operate at such high quality without a PC. In short, the AVERmedia Live Gamer Portable excels in almost all the facets a casual gamer or tournament organizer may need. For fighting games, tournament organizer will find this a must have for multiple setups that can increase the amount of footage gathered from practically any system. It's a revolutionary device that eclipses everything else on the market for what it does. It's a must-have if you're going into recording footage from these devices or on the PC.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: I see it has 3.5mm audio in. Does it mix the hdmi and 3.5mm into a single file or does it record an mp3 seperately?**
A: It has an option that when you set up the setting to have it in its own file or with the video file. I do video file just so I don't have to mesh the video with audio file together.

**Q: Is there any way to record without having multiple 4gb files in pc-free mode? LGP paired with 64gb Sony SDXC formatted in FAT32.**
A: A bit too late. But it could be useful for the following customer.
You can do that, but for maximum 32 Go.
How ?
1. you Format to the zero your SD.
2. You make a partition of max 32 GO.
3. You formation this partition as FAT32 (that now is allowed on a exFat as you have max 32Go).
4. You can format the left space to NTFS or exFat32.
Conclusion you can but any memory card more the 32 Go is kind of useless for this product.
Here are the step-by-step: https://github.com/JamsCenter/2018_01_21_AVerMediaGuide/wiki
I am going to do a video of that late in the month.
Kind regard,
Eloi

**Q: do you need a pc next to the console or can you use sd card to move it to one place from another?**
A: Both actually. PC mode requires it to be plugged into the computer. But PC Free mode records straight to your SD card, but you will need to somehow plug the USB into something to power the device. Like an extra USB port on your Xbox or even a phone USB plug of some sort.

**Q: does this come with all the cables you need...i dont want to buy an extra hdmi**
A: It comes with an HDMI cable, USB Cord, and Component cable adapters. It doesn't come with an AC adapter for PC Free mode, but you don't have to worry about that, unless you have no space for a USB on your console.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Best External Capture Device Yet for Recording and Streaming Gameplay
*by P***S on December 14, 2013*

I highly recommend this device as a streaming and recording solution for capturing gameplay from game consoles. Hookup is easy, simply connect the device to your console using the supplied HDMI cable and connect your own HDMI cable from the LGP to your display and connect the Mini Usb to Usb from the LGP to your Computer or to a usb port on your console if using PC-free mode. The LGP also comes with a component cable so alternatively you can run a component setup as well. Note though prior to connecting to your computer I recommend installing the driver for the device from the Avermedia website because I have personally found that not doing so will cause the device to be improperly recognized. In additional I recommend downloading the latest firmware for the device while you are there as they address bugs and add functionality to the device including the ability to capture in 1080p in PC-free mode. For recording your gameplay you have two options, you can use either ReCentral or PC-Free Mode. ReCentral is Avermedia's free bundled software available for download on Avermedia's website. It works well with the device, its UI is easy to navigate and even gives you three options for which to navigate the option, Pro, Amateur, and Newbie. All three modes will let you configure the same options, essentially each mode simply changes the format in which the settings are presented potentially making it easier or quicker to setup to your to preference. Additionally you have the options of saving profiles, which save your preferences so you quickly load up a profile next time you look to record. For example, I have a YouTube Profile Saved as well as a Twitch.tv Profile for streaming. But Setting up your device for streaming even without saved profiles is by no means time consuming and takes no more than a minute or two. An alternative to using ReCentral is PC-free mode. PC-free mode allows you to plug a SD Card into the device and record without a PC directly onto the SD card. Officially, Avermedia only supports SD cards rated class 10 or higher, though people have had success with lesser rated SD cards. Still keep in mind one might experience glitches and or skipping with lesser rated cards if they are unable to write fast enough. Anyway, this is a great feature for gamers on the go and is perfect for recording gameplay at a friend's house, a local LAN, or a tournament. In addition, competitive gamers need not worry as the addition of the LGP between your console and your monitor or TV does not introduce any input lag making it perfect even for shooters and fighting games where milliseconds count. For streaming again you have a few option, you can use ReCentral, XSplit or the stream Stream Engine in combination with an alternative streaming software. ReCentral is the easiest and least taxing on your computer cause all the video encoding is done within the LGP. You can however use the LGP in combination with your favorite streaming software (the LGP even comes with a free trial of Xsplit), but this will require that you have a good processor, preferably an i7 or possibly and i5 because your computer will have to be capable of quickly re-encoding the video feed otherwise your stream suffer from quality and lag related issues. The benefit using an alternative software however is that you can add a webcam in picture or edit your video feed in ways which you cannot ReCentral. This is not necessarily a fault of ReCentral because adding a webcam in picture option to ReCentral would still require your laptop to re-render the video so at least now there seems to be no easy solution to this. To my understanding, the only streaming software that works with the LGP without a workaround is XSplit. Other programs such as OBS or Wirecast require that you use a live stream engine, which is again available for download from Avermedia's website. The reason for this software is necessary is that these programs will not recognize the LGP as a video input device as they would for something such as webcam, it a minor annoyance but this workaround should be sufficient. Live commentary with this device works flawlessly with Astro headsets as the Mixamp includes an audio out for streaming that plugs directly into the LGP. Users using Turtle Beach headsets may require additional cables, mics or workarounds to get a live commentary set up that works. The biggest competitor of this capture device right now is the Elgato Game Capture HD. In Summary, The LPG has ever so slightly better graphics than the Elgato, the addition of the PC free and the ability to save audio and video to separate files for more convenient editing. I have also notice a green graphical glitch that occurs with some people who stream using the Elgato, but this may only be a problem with some faulty Elgato devices. If you are a Mac user however, your only choice as of now really is to go with the Elgato, as Avermedia's Reentral software is at this time not compatible with the Mac OS. As far as reliability, based on amazon reviews, both devices have reviews where users have received malfunctioning devices or devices that were DOA, although I have no experience with these issues for the Elgato, the LGP had at least initially problems with sending out devices that were DOA. The problem pretty caused the device never to fully boot up and just have a blue light constantly flashing. I encountered this issue but Avermedia quickly sent me out a replacement device, which worked flawlessly. If you receive a device with this issue, I suggest uninstalling the drivers for this device and reinstalling the drivers cause as I have noticed, after installing new firmware versions on to this device, the old drivers stopped working. For me this caused an issue that looked exactly like the blue ring of death but was easily alleviated by uninstalling the old drivers and installing the new drivers for the device. I deducted a star because most people use turtle beach headsets and there is no easy out of box solution for live commentary using your turtle beach headsets (i.e. recording your own voice). For users of this device looking to start a YouTube channel the Software I recommend using in conjunction with this device is Audacity for audio (available for free) and Adobe Premiere Elements 12 for video.
