My understanding is distilling removes just about all the impurities. So what's the point of the charcoal post-filters?

Don't worry about it too much. My city tap water is 304 ppm. Distilled consistently without charcoal 4ppm. Distilled with charcoal - higher as the charcoal disintegrates. First 4 liters showed 178 ppm - The charcoal in it. Did 2 more 4 L batches, and it got down to 20 ppm. Removed the charcoal and consistently get 4 ppm. if you get one, process 4 liters and remove the filter and set it on something white for 2 minutes. Pick it up, and you will see the black charcoal residue on whatever you set it on, full of crud from your water, and that is what you drink. Nobody will convince me that some of the crud isn't released from the charcoal in your stomach. The point is that this is incredibly neat and healthy. 4 ÷ 304 = 1.3% trash remaining in the water. 98.7% of the trash is removed.

What is the approximate cost per gallon for making distilled water with one of these machines, not including the cost of the machine?

It uses 750 watts and it takes about 4 hours to distill a gallon. That means it uses 3000 watt-hours, or 3 kwh per gallon. So multiply that 3 kwh times your electricity cost to get your cost per gallon. If it's low like the midwest (8-10 cents/kwh), a gallon might only cost $0.25, or if it's higher like CA or MA ($0.28/kwh) it might be on the order of $1 per gallon.

Do you have to be present after four hours to shut it off or can you leave the house while it’s running ?

No, you do not have to be present to shut off the distiller, the unit has a built in reset safety that will turn off the distiller when it empties.

The lid does get calicum build up and there is no instruction how to clean it. so what do i do?

I use citric acid. You can buy in the canning section of the grocery store or in bulk on Amazon.
