Excellent rendition (see photo)!
If you’ve never done Diamond Art and have no idea what it is, skip to the end of this review for an explanation using terms that hopefully make more sense than the terms typically used on web pages selling Diamond Art kits…With the exception of deciphering some of the white letters, this kit was very fun to do (lots of colors) and the rendering is excellent! I am VERY pleased with the results (see photo).I was SHOCKED to see bad reviews from people who didn’t even work or complete their kits. You can NOT evaluate a diamond art kit by looking at the canvas. The canvas colors and actual diamond colors NEVER match. I personally only evaluate Diamond Art kits that I have completed. Sometimes I have a favorable (or unfavorable) impression of a kit that is reversed once it is completed and I see the finished product. One kit was favorable until I discovered that the completed kit showed Tigger with no eyes! Also, this dragon kit came with standard packaging, and NONE of the dozens of kits I've completed have included a sealant to complete the picture--that is something that is purchased separately, if desired!Rendering really varies among the different Diamond Art kits, but this kit uses the best rendering software and uses diamond colors that actually match the picture with transitional colors that make the rendition not look as good really close up but amazing when viewed at a little bit of distance. This is the ONLY rendering software I’ve found that can make a small or very detailed picture look realistic. For these kits especially, you need to complete the kit before seeing how good the rendition really is.Other kits change the colors for an unrealistic picture or don’t provide color shading or even leave out important picture features. Out of dozens of kits that I’ve worked, these are my favorite, and I’m very interested in trying some of the other YarnMate dragons! I’ve also added YarnMate to my list of favored manufacturers due to their rendering software. The only negative was the canvas print for some of the white print, which was hard to read. Luckily, very few colors were listed with white print on dark blue, so it wasn’t too difficult (although annoying) to decipher the poorly printed “B”s in some locations. White print is notorious for printing poorly on canvas, although it can use useful to distinguish canvas with similar background colors or letters. This kit is larger at 12x20” than the normal 12x16”. This is not a good kit for beginners due to the lack of circles for guidance, but it would be good as a gift. Recommend—but complete the kit before you evaluate how good it is!Colorful Dragon (G4398)SIZE: 30x50cm (12x20”)SUPPLIES (tray, pen, bags, wax): included (NORMAL packaging); tray is green (vs white shown on the web page)CANVAS QUALITY: very goodCANVAS PRINT QUALITY: some white print is hard to read (especially “B” — see photo for worst print)CANVAS ADHESIVE: very goodDIAMOND QUALITY: average to above averagePICTURE RENDITION: excellent (see photo)!GOOD FOR BEGINNERS: no due to lack of circles for diamond placement guidanceDIAMOND ART EXPLAINED:Diamond Art kits consist of a canvas with a sticky adhesive that is used to hold the back side of diamonds (also called “drills”) in place. To keep dust and other items from sticking to the canvas, a plastic sheet is placed over the canvas and lifted partway while placing diamonds on a section of canvas. To place the diamonds on the canvas, you have a pen that is occasionally stuck into wax (also confusingly referenced as “cement” or “glue” or "clay glue"). The wax is used to stick to the top of the diamond to move it from the tray to the canvas, where it is released from the pen when it touches the adhesive. Moist wax works MUCH better than dry wax for sticking and can move more diamonds, so wax should be kept in a ziplock bag when not in use. Once diamonds are placed, you’ll want to use a roller (comes with some Diamond Art storage boxes) or something like a book to flatten the diamonds and help them stick better to the canvas.Diamonds that are placed in the wrong location can be removed most easily using tweezers. The diamonds are very small, but the whole process is significantly faster than doing traditional cross stitch or needlepoint projects, giving the user a significant sense of accomplishment in less time. Some kits have better picture renditions than other kits, and you really need to look at the rendition to determine whether you will be happy with the finished picture. In general, the larger the canvas the better quality the picture can be.Finished canvases can still be sticky from gaps between diamonds in the adhesion, so many people use a diamond art sealer to seal the canvas and remove the stickiness when wanting to hang up the picture. Good sealer should be clear and smooth—NOT jelly-like and cloudy, so test with paper before using on your canvas! The edges around the picture on the canvas are also almost always sticky and should be taped with white canvas tape or masking tape to cover that stickiness. Pictures that aren’t hung can be placed in a diamond art canvas book.If you decide you like doing Diamond Art, a light pad (also called a light box or light panel) can significantly help with accurately reading the canvas numbers, especially for canvases with not-so-good print or lots of dark colors that can be hard to see with natural light. Look for one that does not have an on/off button on the top that can easily be pushed off, if possible. I would also recommend getting at least size A3, which will fit the entire Diamond Art canvas for the average size canvas of 30x40cm (12x16”). You should also consider getting a Diamond Art storage bottles to hold your diamonds while working on a project, since kits that contain ziplock bags almost never contain more than a few bags.

Fun to do, but this image isn't great.
The original image is much too detailed to transfer the way you imagine it would to a diamond painting. While I've had fun doing it, I'm a third of the way through and getting the feeling it's not going to be easy to tell what's going on in the image. Not to mention the K and R colors are half a shade different. I am NOT excited about going back and fourth with those I missed.

Gorgeous Fun Project
I've always wanted to take the plunge and buy one of these. I used to do coloring pages/books during a previous call center job. (Yes, we were allowed to as long as we had all our notes in the system. You were OFTEN waiting for the customer to do something.) And they always brought me relaxation and joy. This is no different. It was a great first time buy. Comes with everything. Nice canvas fabric. And Gorgeous picture in the end.

Great Gift for Crafty Family Members
This diamond painting kit is a gem. Perfect for adults seeking a creative outlet, it's a delightful alternative to traditional hobbies. I gifted it to my crafty mother-in-law, and she's absolutely smitten. She used to enjoy puzzles, but now these kits have become her new obsession. The quality is superb, and the finished product is simply stunning.

Very detailed image doesn't convert to diamond painting well, cheaply packaged
I was really excited to get this kit - I love dragons, and I love diamond painting. However upon receiving it, I was very disappointed even before I started. As far as the kit itself goes, it comes with everything you need to do a diamond painting - the diamond drills, the tool, wax, tray, and little extra baggies to store your extra drills once opened. It does not come with a way to seal the finished piece. The packaging is minimal - all the parts were just thrown into the same plastic bag, which was shipped. If it were being gifted, this would not be suitable at all. But that's not even the major complaint at this point. The design shown is a gorgeous dragon, with lots of fine wispy details. This doesn't convert over to a diamond painting at all, as the diamonds are large and round. Many of the details and colors from the design shown are completely lost.Save your money for a different kit - this one just won't turn out like you expect it to based on the photo.
