Really soft to the touch. All the pieces fit perfectly together. There are thin, straight "side" pieces to give that square look, but 2 are missing for me. So it's 12 interlocking pieces + 12 straight pieces.Overall thinner than expected but pretty comfortable for exercising, yoga, or just chilling.
