Has its five stars as it is an excellent volume for the general reader to consult before seeing a play, to refresh memories of a play, to get some ideas etc. Plus it contains some great observations, and there is a very sharp intelligence at work, which deserves to grandstand a little. An idiosyncratic companion to the plays, worth more than many more strictly academic introductions. Very good value, too.

This book is about a legend and it is written from a very important man. I totally recommend it to people who are interested in how Bloom evaluates Shakespeare's contribution to humanity

Mostly brilliant. bloom is the best modern Shakespeare critic. I was a little disappointed with the excessive detail on different versions of the plays, eg Hamlet, hence dropped a star.

This is a fine and passionate book. Many may take issue with Professor Bloom’s thesis that Shakespeare “ invented modern consciousness “. This, however, is a misreading of the book. Professor Bloom’s concept is that Shakespeare prefigured the modern consciousness and, by doing so, helped both to define and illustrate it. After all, those titans of 19th and 20th century thought, Marx, Nietzsche and Freud, were steeped in Shakespeare and referenced him constantly. Shakespeare’s intellectual fertilisation of modern thought is so persuasive and thorough that it’s become almost an unconscious reflex. Professor Bloom’s analyses of the individual plays are a joy to read and come from a lifetime of thinking deeply about England’s national poet. In a few judicious sentences he will ignite in your brain different ways of thinking about the plays so that when you return to a them, they will seem fresh and new and as if you have never read them before. The finest Shakespearean criticism since Hazlitt and Bradley and worth more than a legion of contemporary Shakespeare academics with their perverse desire to diminish Shakespeare. If this is “ bardolatory”, then give me more.

Comencé a leer el libro pero por otros compromisos no continué la lectura, sin embargo es un autor muy erudito con una prosa brillante y una fuerza que invita a leerlo como una novela. Excelente la edición y presentación.

A scholarly, yet accessible read, with the most appropriate material selected from each play. What amounts to annotation is interesting. If you're willing to do a bit of work in exchange for great rewards, this book is for you. dgp

L'autore a dispetto di tutte le riserve e aperte critiche di una certa parte del mondo letterario che non gli perdona alcune scelte o opinioni distanti dalla vulgata attuale spesso miseramente politically correct, è a mio avviso un grandissimo critico letterario, a quale sempre ispirarsi e attingere. Ho letto solo parzialmente tale testo, lo ammetto, ma mi è bastato per giudicarlo semplicemente straordinario. Non posso né riassumere né dare un giudizio critico perché Bloom è da sempre il modello a cui tendere. Purtroppo non sono imparziale a mio avviso è semplicemente una lettura imprescindibile sul Bardo e ogni suo intervento dedicato a ciascuna opera teatrale valutata individualmente è al contempo illuminante e stimolante. Harold Bloom ... who else?
