Let's start by saying the art is cute, I mean really identifiable for TeeTurtle fans and those who are new to that theme. It works great for children as it is bright and colorful and just fun. The game can be taken seriously, as in everyone is strategizing, doing their best to build their stable of unicorns and just focused. it also works great for a group that socializes while playing. Think sitting around the table and playing a game while catching up on what is going on with everyone. Throw in a few expansion packs, and it scales fine for a large group. When it comes to children, just exclude the NSFW pack if you have it (expansions are easily identifiable) and maybe remove a couple of the more difficult cards for young children. Generally though, the cards are not especially difficult. If the younger kids struggle, it's going to be due to words they don't know ow instructions. They now have a kid version, but I'd say the 7-8 year old kid who are reading at a pretty good level should be fine with just a hint of a adult help. Now if you are cut-throat, obviously they get a disadvantage from having to show someone their card to learn it, but this is not truly a game for cut throat behavior when you throw in some kids into the mix. Now as far as the the game play goes, if you have 8+ it does take a long time to go around the table and get everyone a turn and it will exceed 60 minutes, easily. However, it's pretty rare someone isn't engaged, either in the game or the shat, and it's a competitive game that can kind of work for those who are not really that into heavy competition or the screw your neighbor kind of games. The theming, the unicorns themselves, the things you can do makes screwing your neighbor fun. It's not mean spirited or tilted in favor for one particular person's strategic aptitude. Building stable of unicorns is fun. Admiring your friend's baby unicorn and taking it away immediately is also fun. Getting excited about a great card and then having someone neighing you... fun. Cute and cuddly, yes. Simple to play with a variety of cards and can entertain a lot of players, yes. It's not a huge change in mechanics from what other games do, but it's just great fun. I received this game as a gift years ago, and I've purchased it for others since. It's just a great game to be able to pull out without a lot of set-up or huge explanations. Just play and have fun, and yeah, bring your kids in too!

I just played a couple games with my family (4 players total, me and my two brothers ages 16-20 and our mom) one game with the default cards, and two with the Rainbow Apocalypse expansion mixed in. Most card games tend to just play themselves, but this one actually takes some thought and strategy. The game is somewhat complex and has a little bit of a learning curve. Still, it should be easy enough to grasp after playing a game or two, even for younger children. My only suggestion would be giving basic unicorn cards more of a use, because they are just strictly worse than magical unicorns. They don't feel very good to play when you could be playing a comparatively stronger and more impactful card instead. A couple times during our games, one of our hands would be clogged with too many basic unicorn cards and it takes a lot of turns to be able to use them all. There are cards to solve this problem, but sometimes you won't end up drawing any. (Because all you're drawing is basic unicorn cards!!) Not a big deal by any means, but something simple like adding some cards that interact with them or maybe being able to play two in a turn by sacraficing your draw would make basic unicorns way more interesting. That said, the overall balance of the cards is pretty good. Some magical unicorns do feel a little strong, mainly the ones that allow you to bring out multuple unicorns in a turn. It's not a big deal though because neigh cards do a good job at stopping those overly strong moves. They also allow other players to interject when someone is close to winning, which makes games quite close and intense. It also leads to hilarious moments when everyone throws down neighs to block other player's neighs. If you are looking for a card game to play, this is the one! 10/10 would recommend!

I absolutely love this game. Let me explain: Many complain about the “setup” and instructions. There is virtually no setup to this game. There are white cards that you don’t shuffle into the black deck. You choose one of the white cards. The end. Then it’s just like any other card game as far as shuffling and dealing. There are even charts in the instructions. If you’ve ever played a strategy or RPG card game before, you’ll be fine. If not... I would think you would still be fine...? Maybe you have issues with maps too? The instructions... well, I don’t know how they would make them any easier, honestly. They are mind boggling at first, yes. But as any good teacher would attest, there are some things that you have to do in order to understand, and reading about it won’t teach. Once you start playing and get the flow, return back to the instructions when you’re unsure of something. Now, another thing I noticed in the reviews is that people are upset it’s inappropriate for children. On my box, it says very clearly “ages 14+”. Now, I did play with my 12 year old and I didn’t find a problem. I realize I do not have the first edition. Two things about that: check it out before you play with your kid, since it does say 14 and up; and there are no truly inappropriate cards in the second edition. The only thing is that some unicorns kill other unicorns... so if you don’t want your kid playing a game where they cause imaginary death to imaginary animals (and I get that), then don’t play with kids. I find it a perfect tweet and teen game, and I actually really enjoy this game as well. This game reminded me how much I loved these types of games. I am SO pleased with the purchase. Besides game play, the cards are well drawn and colorful, and I love that they color-coded the corners to show you easily what type of card it is. That makes the cards that allow you to search the deck so much easier to execute, and the instructions on types of cards also. But the packaging is so great! It is easy to store, it is cute, and there is room for more cards if you buy expansions. Overall, I give this game 5/5 stars. Honestly, I would give it an extra star if I could. It is well-made and I’m excited to play more and see what happens. There is one section of the instructions that haven’t even come into play yet, so I want to keep playing to see when I get a hand that triggers this.

We have all the expansions for this game, we enjoy it that much. I'll review each expansion later separately. As a whole, as I said above we really enjoy this game. It plays 2-8 players but I will say we prefer it at less than 8, even though we've played that many. There is so much going on at that point it becomes hard to track all the different cards that are in play. I would say 3-5 might be our own personal favorite range for Unstable Unicorns. The cards are wonderful in the base game and in each expansion, they are colorful, have hilarious names, and very pleasing combinations that grow the game-play. As you build up your stable, which is your personal playing area, you'll find yourself looking down at the rainbowtastic combination of Unicorns and powers you've assembled and smile to yourself. With your cute little baby Unicorn leading the way, you have a simple winning condition to accomplish, just place a set amount of Unicorn cards down on the table. That is it; this "unstable" game is that easy. You don't need special energy costs or requirements to play a Unicorn; you just take one from your hand and put it in your stable. Your first time sitting down with this game you'll think the game is going to end quickly with you just laying down some cards, seems too easy right? Yes and no. You can get a really great random draw of cards and be on your way towards building a perfect stable of charming Unicorns, but then things starting getting "Unstable." Through the use of upgrades, downgrades, instants, and magical unicorns this game ramps up the action. The humor and the LOL "take that" actions you play on your fellow opponents will get cheers from some and boos from others in your game. The very clever Instant card "Neigh" lets you deny and stop another player's action, but they can then neigh your neigh. This back and forth play which you'll all experience eventually playing this game is frustrating and funny at the same time, very Munchkin like. I do feel like there is a bit of imbalance in the game, some cards are really powerful and so many others are just average. I won't say this harms my opinion of the game, I really think the idea of this game being unbalanced and unstable is part of what the game is supposed to be. You won't be disappointed with that randomness, unless the luck of the draw puts the funnier and more powerful cards in the hands of other players and you are left with just basic Unicorns. You may encounter a stalemate at times where if everyone is paying attention you can actively prevent someone from winning. This will drag the game on for too long which isn’t fun. Don't go into this wanting to play hardcore strategy, you won't have as much fun and you'll likely encounter that stalemate. You're playing this to laugh and put out crazy card combinations to screw over the other players. Do that with your best Unicorn spirit in your heart and you’ll enjoy how each game unfolds whether you win or lose. In the end this game is funny, easy to teach, and always popular with new players. Jump into this one with a love of Unicorns, rainbows, glitter bombs, and adorable artwork and you'll have a great new card game added to your gaming shelf.

Love this game

This game has changed our life. My husband, our best friends, and I used to be avid Catan players. We played Catan everytime we got together (2-3 times a week) for months and months and months. Well, I played Unstable Unicorns once with my brother and really enjoyed it, so we decided to buy it and give it a try with our usual game group. We have played Catan maybe twice in the last year!! Unstable Unicorns has stolen our love! We play probably 3 nights a week..2 or 3 or sometimes 4 games each night. I cannot recommend this game enough. Now we own all the expansions, and I just bought the NSFW base game which is equally SO MUCH FUN!!! The strategy is the best. The wording on the cards is very specific, and we are still coming up with new combos for cards. You can play just kind of basic and simple, or you can play very strategically just depending on what sort of board games you are into. My husband is really into Magic the Gathering, and we consider Unstable Unicorns kind of like an intro to MtG. You have your Neighs/instant cards, magic/sorcery card...creatures/unicorns...anytime we come up with something in Unstable we aren't sure how to resolve, we compare to MtG rules. :) Plus, the unicorns are adorable. On the nights we don't get together with our gamer friends, we typically squeeze in a game or two before bed with our kids- ages 7 and 11. Our 7 year old wins nearly every game when we play as a family which just baffles me, because we are very competitive and extreme rule followers. We have gotten into some real fights with our friends over wording of cards and difference of opinions of such wording. Anyway, I'm rambling...just buy Unstable Unicorns. You will be glad you did!!
