Pure Reason Revolution return with the monumental Amor Vincit Omnia . The album title translates as Love Conquers All, a re-working of the slogan emblazoned on songwriter Jon Courtney's old school blazer. The original motto reads Truth Conquers All, and either version tells you a lot about this band. The quartet are good at titles that get right to the heart of the matter. Their debut mini-album was Cautionary Tales For The Brave . It warned you what might happen to a band sticking to their guns, but then stuck to them anyway. And all of PRR's output since, including first full-length effort 'The Dark Third' , has reflected that courageous spirit and helped to build the group a world-wide audience. New album 'Amor Vincit Omnia' will only win over more people. The unexpected earthiness of its more progressive tendencies and a new, gritty edge (reflective of Jon's Depeche Mode habit) mean Pure Reason's second long-player would beat any of Muse's records in a fight the fact, too, that 'Amor Vincit Omnia' is both a rockier and more electronic proposition than its predecessor is typical of PRR's ability to fuse seemingly paradoxical ambitions and tastes. Imagine if Fleet Foxes had grown up listening to the exciting electro music currently coming out of Paris, throw in a few super-heavy riffs, and you ll be some of the way to imagining the depth of the PRR sound. Just to listen to 'Amor Vincit Omnia' is to be part of something massive.

More consistent, pacier and more trance-like than before
I found this latest album of Pure Reason Revolution's their most consistently pleasing release to date. After the EP "Cautionary tales for the Brave" and their first album "The Dark Third", this pacey new album fulfils the potential of those first releases.The band appeals to music fans from many backgrounds, as diverse as club and dance to progressive rock on the other hand. Their style of creating almost trance-like grooves accompanied by beautiful harmonies from the vocalists is very appealing, in particular when it is done at pace."Amor Vincit Omnia" is more consistent in oits pace than either of the previous two releases and is, in a sense, edging more towards the club/dance side of the market than before, reinforced by the occasional use of reverb for the first time.Good album!

This is still Pure Reason Revolution. No, really!
Sure, this isn't More Of The Same. It's not "The Dark Third" part 2. If you like (genre) labeling, it's more "electronica" and less "progressive" this time around."Amor Vincit Omnia" is full of PRR's talent, but not of Ye Olde Success Re-hashed. I love TDT, even though it at times sounded like something from Pink Floyd et al. And that's fine with me, as I like that kind of music. Perhaps "Golden Clothes" on TDT comes closest to what they sound like nowadays on AVO. To me, tracks like "Les Malheurs", "Victorious Cupid", "Apogee", "Deus Ex Machina", and "AVO" are full of PRR's quality music - even though it arrives in a different suit this time.There are many musicians and groups who keep to formula playing, clinging to expectations and wishes from their fans and record companies, re-making their own music. Playing safe. And there's nothing wrong with that in a way, I guess.From that perspective, this is a pretty brave record. They're moving on, refusing to be pigeon holed and categorized. It's not a flawless record, though, as some songs perhaps meander too long before hitting their musical stride - but that's just my opinion. PRR try to evolve, and on this record they have moved in a direction pretty far away from the one they took with TDT. And there's nothing wrong with that either, in my mind's eye. As with music (and movies) in general, it's all a matter of personal taste and expectations in the end.I was happily surprised by AVO, and I'm very curious to hear what Pure Reason Revolution will try to achieve on their third offering. I hope they keep on evolving and surprising us...

It's a grower
Not a bad album by any means. Moments of PRR genius throughout and extremely poor production (described as muddy earlier, which i agree with) mar this greatly.Fans will appreciate, After a few weeks, the album hasgrown on me, top songwriting!

The Envelope Has Been Well & Truly Pushed
First listen was a shock. I didn't get it, the synths were so rough and primitive and all the space was gone. 2nd listen, the grooves started to work their way through and things began to come together. 3rd listen. ...The band is at least 3 years down the road from TDT, they've grown and developed and forged ahead. Gone are the Floyd-esque ethereal spaces. The musical DNA is different, more European: London, Paris, Berlin, Ibiza, and the result is something uniquely its own, owing as much to the rhythms of the dance floor as the rock venue. A pared down line-up has given them a new raw earthiness, and they can lay down a nasty groove alongside their metal moments. The space is now full of bursting sounds and shimmering voices, with washes of dub and flashes of euphoria warping in here and there, and tracks unfold as moving and weaving and changing things. 21st century sexual politics to 21st century music, with a generous nod to the neuromantics, and some scorching guitar, soaring vocals and searing grooves.The stunning vocal harmonies of Jon and Chloe spiral through the curtains of coruscating sound on the flat out guitar tracks: Victorious Cupid lurches in from the middle distance into a blistering twisted love song; the lonely madness of fractured waltz Keep Me Sane/Insane skitters and tumbles into the storm of Apogee; the monolithic Deus Ex Machina lands with a blast of electronics, before transforming into a Nordic glam stomp, with uber-riff and cathedral-esque vocal harmonies. Full on dance beats are played with industrial percussion, fierce guitars and the dirtiest mini moog sounds they could find. Les Malheurs kicks off with a brutal synth to a churning sex beat, like The Human League from Hell, prime remix material. Disconnect shows a grim humour with a cynical lyric set to sunshine electro-dub. The Gloaming looms in on a dark piano led electronic wave that washes over you, the voices sweep through the music, and the rest is for you to decide. The triumphant chant of Amor Vincit Omnia is sombre reflection and also hope and celebration, and for me encapsulates the passion and energy that has clearly gone into this album.This music is not like what went before. This is something new and vital. This is down and dirty. And it's brilliant. Listen to this album for what it is and it'll blow you away. Make no mistake, Pure Reason Revolution just got a whole lot more interesting.

Amor, amor, amor.
Best yet guys, keep it up - great sound, and so well put together. I live in awe, at how some folk can construct such great music again and again - must be passion I guess. Just don't leave things so long before any more! The bonus DVD is a real treat too - but why are the vids always European shows - get a Reading venue DVD released - now you're rockin'.

Der Fluch des Zweitwerks
Nachdem Pure Reason Revolution mit seinem Erstlingswerk "The dark third" einen absoluten Superhammer herausgebracht hat, kann der zweite Output der Band nicht sonderlich überzeugen. All das, was bei "The dark third" begeisterte, fehlt hier. Der bombasische Sound, die Ideenvielfalt, die Abwechselung, die Spannungsbögen und der "floydige Grundtenor" treten zurück zugunsten von sich ständig wiederholenden Gesangsstrophen und Phrasen, die musikalisch nicht sonderlich orginell, sondern eher unbeweglich dumpf und ideenlos daherkommen. Man kann sich des Eindrucks nicht erwehren, dass die Band offensichtlich meinte, den Fans langsam eine Veröffentlichung zu "schulden", das ganze Werk wirkt einfach unfertig und lieblos zusammengewürfelt. Gute, neue Einfälle fehlen. Statt dessen werden u. a. grelle 80er Jahre - sounds zitiert, die in meinen Augen schon damals vollkommen überflüssig waren...jetzt wirken sie total anachronistisch.Daran kann auch die schöne Aufmachung, der gute Sound und die Begleit DVD der Limitid edition nichts ändern.Traurig, aber nach dem guten Erstlingswerk lag die Messlatte wohl einfach etwas zu hoch.Ich kann diese CD nicht empfehlen und hoffe, dass es bei der nächsten besser wird.

Überdurchschnittliche Enttäuschung
Wie die meisten meiner Vorschreiber hat mich das erste Album ziemlich umgehauen. 5 Sterne am Firmament.Das neue Album ist wirklich nicht schlecht und einen Mangel an Eigenständigkeit kann man PPR echt nicht vorwerfen, ich wüsste nicht mit was oder wem man diese Musik vergleichen könnte. Pink Floyd mit Billy Corgan auf Depeche Mode greift sicherlich zu kurz. In jedem Falle kommt es in praktisch allen Bereichen nicht an den Vorgänger ran.Ich persönlich finde ja die ach so gehypten 80ziger musikalisch in vieler Hinsicht ziemlich grottig (erinnert mich an dx 7 keyboard sounds und schlagzeugsounds die nach nassen Dash- trommeln klingen) und leider haben sich eben so ein paar deutliche Remineszenzen auf dem Album breitgemacht. Dem megageilen Gesang der immer noch das Element mit dem grössten Wiedererkennungswert bei PRR ist, tut das aber keinen Abbruch.Am 22.3 hab ich die Band übrigens Live im Magnetclub in Berlin gesehen und das neue Material kommt live auch echt knackig und auch gut rockig rüber. Als sie in der zweiten Hälfte des Gigs dann ein paar Tracks vom ersten Album gespielt haben, ist aber wiederum klargeworden, dass die beiden Alben schon eine Liga trennt...Kann mir im übrigen jemand sagen, warum Bands heutzutage nur noch 60 Minuten plus einem kleinen Zugäbchen spielen? Als ich ich jung war, ging unter 2 Stunden selten was... Dekadente Zeiten...Also im Angesicht des ersten Überfliegers schon ne Enttäuschung, aber ne immer noch überdurchschnittliche. 80ziger Fans können auch noch einen Punkt draufpacken.

Abgerutscht
Scheinbar bin ich nicht der einzige, der von "The Dark Third" umgehauen war (die Scheibe war mit Sicherheit eine der stärksten Platten der letzten Jahre) und denen beim Hören von AVO die Kinnlade heruntergeklappt ist - leider nicht vor Staunen, sondern vor Enttäuschung.Von den Prog-Einflüssen ist fast nichts übrig, lange und facettenreiche Songs (wie die "Ambassadors") sind Fehlanzeige, dagegen gibt Disco-Synthie-Klänge im Überfluss. Das kann bei einzelnen Songs ganz gut funktionierten (und tut es z.B. bei "Deus Ex Machina" oder "AVO" auch), aber unter dem Strich bleibt aber doch ein schwaches Album, von dem ich mir viel mehr erwartet hatte und das auch nach mehrmaligem Hören und einem Konzertbesuch irgendwie nicht richtig losgeht.Aufgrund der einzelnen guten Songs gibt es noch drei Sterne - man kann sich die Scheibe schon anhören, auch wenn sie nicht begeistern kann.

Dancefloorprog!!
Un nouveau genre musical? Hérité des DJ's et de Depeche Mode?le groupe vient de se séparer c'est dommage car la formation occupe un terrain intéressant pour ceux qui aiment l'electro sans la vulgarité diffusée sur notre chère FM.Force est de reconnaitre que dans cet opus il y a un morceau qui casse la barraque c'est "Deus Ex Machina" avec son rythme de locomotive et ses mélodies entêtantes. "les malheurs" qui ouvre le disque est de la même veine. Les autres morceaux sont un cran en-dessous mais il y a une constante de qualité dans la recherche sonore et dans les voix qui sont très bien travaillées; A condition d'aimer ce chant.... un peu mou mais "so british"!!!

Reason? Revolution? Auf jeden Fall genial!
Keine Revolution, dafür ist diese Art des Crossovers schon von verschiedenen anderen Bands anderer Genres oft genug praktiziert. Und mit Vernunft hat diese Art von Musik nix zu tun. Aber PRR schaffen es, diesen Mix auf eine frische, unverbrauchte Art zu präsentieren.Mein Tipp: Nichts erwarten, sondern einfach wirken lassen. Für mich ein Highlight des noch jungen Jahres.Den Verfasser der Pruduktbeschreibung allerdings sollte man standrechtlich... zumindest in die Schule schicken. Die verwirrte Herleitung des Titels ist das Hirnloseste, was ich bisher gelesen habe. "Amor voncit omnia" ist ein Zitat von Vergil und schon viel älter als jedwede Phrase "Love conquers all" in welchem Popsong auch immer... :-(

Fabuleux !!!
Que voilà une oeuvre originale !!.Il est agréable de s'aperçevoir que de ci, de là, d'excellentes formations de musiciens existent, qui, plutôt discrets dans la démarche commerciale (Peu de promotions), font preuve d'une création étonnante.Pure Reason Revolution fait partie de ceux-là.Tout est réuni pour obtenir un CD incontournable.Prenez un compositeur-leader-guitariste inspiré (Jon Courtney), une chanteuse-bassiste au joli timbre de voix, et au non moins joli physique (Chloé Alper), un duo de guitariste-batteur (Paul Glover et Jamie Wilcox), le tout mélangé dans un cocktail d'électro-accoustique de la meilleure facture grâce à la présence des drum kits et autre séquenceurs, et vous obtiendrez "Amor Vincit Omnia".Cet album est excellent, à tout point de vue. Une très bonne production vient donner une ampleur certaines aux 9 morceaux, et surtout aux 2 plus "péchus" que sont "Les malheurs", et le génial "Deus ex machina" que l'on retrouve en Live sur le DVD bonus, et qui est sans aucun doute la pièce maîtresse de cet album.Les compositions sont très agréables à l'oreille, et les arrangements vocaux (Bien que la voix de Chloé Alper soit un peu "en retrait") plutôt sympas.A découvrir d'urgence.Salutation à tous les amazoniens.

Schade. Zu früh gefreut. Hat man nach dem starken Debut-Album noch gedacht, hier strahlt ein neuer Stern am Prog-Rock-/Indie-Rock-Himmel, so wird man nun vom Nachfolger enttäuscht.Was soll das sein? Electro-Pop? Sorry, in dem Genre gibt es bessere Vertreter.Der Vorgänger "The Dark Third" war richtig gut und auch live (als Vorgruppe beim Blackfield-Konzert) haben mich PRR absolut überzeugt.Aber das hier? Überwiegend einfallsloses Electro-Gedudel ohne Höhepunkte. Je öfter ich die Scheibe höre, desto langweiliger wird sie.

音楽的な完成を見た会心作
独自の世界観でカテゴライズ不能な音楽を展開してきたイギリス産のロックバンドの実質3rd。アンビエントでメロウな前作も素晴らしかったが、そこにDepech Mode的なダークでエレクトロな要素を取り入れた本作も良い。誰かの物まねでない個性があり、派手さはないが上手いボーカルの存在もあって病みつきにある魅力がある。解散が惜しまれるがこの作品とは長く付き合って生きたい。
