I actually liked it without a stiff lining. As far as waterproof, I guess it wouldn't be, but I use screw on tops of travel containers or put in ziplock bags, and I like it won't add to luggage weight like a heavy makeup bag does. I'm mailing five to granddaughters, and that box won't be as heavy either. Bought one for myself for first aid supplies in bathroom closet, and it held a lot of differently-shaped items. So I love it.
