When I Sing, Mountains Dance: A Novel

poetic yet a novel
Loved the poetic descriptions and the point of views that each chapter presented. A wonderful read, but needs to be read thoughtfully, slowly and with an open mind.

Fantastic Novel!
I love this novel! It's fantastic how the story is told from so many perspectives, both human and non-human. A beautifully written story, with moments of humor and passages of beauty and grace.

a beautiful, form defying poem of a book
Have not encountered this author before, but am a fan of Max Porter and I saw a recommendation from him, so guessed it could be my type of writing. This is a really lovely book, with language use that makes you catch your breath (unlike mine) and an anti narrative anti linear form which leaves you unable to get swept up in the book, so you're always having to give as much as you take when reading. I found myself being constantly surprized by the book, which allows no room for passive immersion as every chapter catches you out and fills you with reflection and wonder. This book reminded me a bit of reading Virginia Wolf, as every single word seemed to be chosen specifically for a purpose, and each phrase managed to evoke the senses and conjure up meaning without any overwrought language or heavy handed description or metaphor. There was not one clumsy sentence in the book. A book that I suspect I'll read many times. Can't wait to get a copy for my daughter. Can't wait to see what Sola does next.
