Excellent overview of the War on the Eastern Front
A comprehensive overview of the fighting on the Eastern Front in WW1 is like a hen's tooth: very hard to find. This books succeeds admirably in doing just that. It explains the interactions among the leading figures of that area and time, their influence on decision-making and the political and military developments and actions, all with commendable ease and fluidity. In spite of many of the names (people and places) being unfamiliar, one seldom has to flick backwards and forwards trying to recall who /where was what. By the time I had finished the book, I was shocked by the casualties suffered on all sides, every bit as bad - if not worse - than those on the Western Front, the political complexity behind the scene and the recognition that such an important facet of WW1 is largely overlooked in British historiography, apart from odd mentions of the likes of the Battle of Tannenberg, Brusilov Offensive and Carporetto. Professor Lloyd deserves huge credit for his work. The depth of research and his ability to link such a complex series of battles and political developments deserves the highest recognition.Against such an achievement, any criticism may seem petty. But the one area in which the content does not keep pace with the writing and scholarship is the maps. At least maps are included which give a general sense of the area under discussion but that's about the best that can be said of them.

Recensione
Copre la mancanza di una corretta valutazione di quanto importante sia stato il fronte orientale nel quadro globale della prima guerra mondiale.

Wonderful read - learned so much
Even though I studied history at university, like a lot of Western Europeans my main images and understandings are from the Western front. This book is a useful antidote to that western perspective, and the author brilliantly explores the more active - and arguably, over the long term, influential - front, the outcomes of which, especially after the Russian revolution, both laid the seeds of misfortune for Europe twenty years years later and has resonance right up to our present day with what's going on in Ukraine (this war seems to have played an important role in stimulating Ukrainian self-identity, along with the other slav nations. What's interesting is how much of a near-run thing - right up until the 1918 defeat at Veneto Venezia, the Austrian Empire - despite its military deficiencies - was doing surprisingly well. Having read this, I emerged with a lot of 'what if' thoughts about how different Eastern Europe might have been, and how close the Dual Alliance was to winning

Vergessener Kriegsschauplatz
