Good story
This is a good story by local author, Jan Smith. With a little refining, I think it would be a great story. The positives:-The book feels like looking in on a small town in the early 1900s as immigrants live and work to make a better life for themselves.-The Scandinavian heritage is obviously researched and laced throughout the book, making it somewhat educational for those not overly familiar with it.-Clean story, with cute illustrations by the author throughout-It features a strong female character. Yay!Cons:-I didn't like how the book ended. No spoiler alert, but the book follows the Sara, a young women, almost the entire time, until it gets to about the last two or three chapters and its switches viewpoints entirely. Also, there is no real wrap up or conclusion. It just ends, with another book obviously coming along at some point but I wish it would have had some kind of clear "lesson learned" or objective.-It's also kind of hard to see a clear plot in the story. Sara is working hard but to what end? There is very little tension in the book or direction. Once or twice the book almost lost my interest and I am an avid reader who puts up with a lot.Overall, I finished the book, so I would recommend the book, particularly those interested in history and Scandinavian heritage.
