It also works as an Asus AiMesh access point.
I was looking for a higher end Asus AiMesh access point to bring Wi-Fi to an area of a house with low signal. (I already have another Asus router in the same house.) At first I bought a different Asus wifi access point that sounded good on paper (the Asus ExpertWifi EBA63, which is a dedicated access point). However after trying two different units of that model, it turned out that the EBA63 units I tried made an audible buzzing noise when they were transmitting. So I returned the EBA63 units, did some research, and bought this Asus RT-AX57 Go travel router. I bought this router after learning that it could be used as an AiMesh access point. Adding this router as an AiMesh node is pretty simple, which is nice. It basically involves clicking one button called "Add AiMesh Node", from your main Asus router's web interface. I was looking for a wall mountable Asus AiMesh access point with low or no audible noise. (This travel router doesn't make any noise that I could detect.) Although this router is technically a complete router and not marketed only as an access point, all modern Asus routers that support AiMesh can be set to either of two different modes that allow them to function as an access point. One software mode is called "Access Point", and the other mode is called an "AiMesh Node". I set up this travel router as an AiMesh Node, because the set up and management is simpler than the other options. Also, the AiMesh mode reportedly allows smoother Wi-Fi handoffs than the access point mode. A possible downside of this router model is that it does not support power over ethernet (POE), so it needs to be installed close enough to a power outlet. However the router has been very capable so far and nice looking. It is wall mountable. It offers ethernet backhaul. It can support multiple wifi networks at the same time (SSIDs). I also noticed that the LED light can be turned off in software or covered with a piece of tape, which is good if you happen to be installing it where someone sleeps. So basically, it worked well for the purpose.

I really like it. I want another one!
I absolutely love this router! I first purchased a larger ASUS router for the house and I was so impressed with it (particularly the app and web interface) that I bought this one because there is so many uses. At first, I thought about just using it as a AiMesh router which worked great, by the way, but my son recently needed a VPN because he was on the school dorm wifi and they were blocking streaming apps. I setup NordVPN on it and it is running w/o any issues. I'm actually thinking about buying another just because it is so easy and a great deal for what you get. A bonus is that it has AiProtection which would possibly cut down on scammy ads, etc. Also, it is usb-c charged so you can actually run off of an external battery if needed.

A great little travel router
Great little device with a full feature set of a regular Asus router. Can be used as a router for an apartment or a small house, but will really shine as a travel device. Can also be configured as an AiMesh node, wireless bridge and supports VPN (client and server). Great at connecting to public WiFi or mobile phone hotspot (USB tethering) and providing VPN protected connectivity to all your devices while traveling. Can be configured to turn VPN on/off with a button. Looks like this will be a part of my laptop travel bag going forward. Currently have this router in the public WiFi mode, but connected to my home WiFi with a different SSID running with a VPN client. So any device needing a quick VPN connection can connect to this SSID and have full VPN protection (without turning on a VPN client on the main home router). A good use case, when not traveling.

Great Portable Router, Highly Recommend!
This is an awesome, portable router! I use it on personal and business trips all the time. It's an added layer of protection and allows my devices to safely communicate on their own, private network. It's also a workaround for Wi-Fi networks that limit your number of connected devices. The only downside is the process required to connect the device to new networks. It's improved with recent updates, but remains somewhat of a clunky process and experience. The process takes roughly 5 mins, with a few restarts involved. If you have a little patience, this device is definitely worth the effort!

Multiple fatal design flaws for WiFi public access modes
I like Asus. Use this brand extensively. My use case is protecting my laptop when I travel. BUT, this router has multiple design flaws causing me to return it. It won't connect to some valid WiFi networks that my gl.inet travel router devices connect to just fine. ASUS support was unable to fix the issue. A second design flaw is that it does not remember public WiFi network settings. So each time I change networks in public internet mode, I have to reconfigure the device from scratch. So if I go back and forth between home and starbucks, I have to reconfigure it from scratch each time. It should remember the connections like a laptop does or like my gl.inet travel routers do. Another design flaw is that it turns off the ability to route from WAN to LAN once you connect on public internet node. That should be configurable. Another issue is that it doesn't have a fail over mode from one WAN connection to another WAN connection. (gl.inet has this too.) A final issue is that it does not recognize and work with my mobile phone in tethered mode. Note that all of these features work fine on my gl.inet devices. I'm an IT professional. I wanted to like this product, and I love that it's not manufactured in China, but it just doesn't work for me. Asus released this product without testing the public WiFI use cases. Disappointing. Returned for credit. I'll buy this device again if Asus fixes these fatal flaws. Note research shows that other users are having the same issue. I'm using the latest firmware. On the pro side: Nice user interface and a human answered my support call which I was not expecting.

Good form factor and connectivity, absolutely horrible documentation and setup.
It is just the right size for a travel router, and it is useful for communications. Setup and documentation are a nightmare, and I haven't been able to figure out how to install NORD VPN on it after 2 months of trying. I have one more month to make it work. All the documentation is on line, in the form of FAQs, which means you have to open multiple windows and keep track of them as you work your way thru them. This is a nightmare. The home/away switch might be useful, but there is no real explanation of WHY one would need this, or how it couldbest be used. It uses a USB-C power connector, which is good, and there are no external antennas to break, which is good.

The Perfect Networking Companion!!!
One of the most versatile and dynamic network devices I've ever purchased. It does virtually everything in the smallest form factor I've ever seen. It's only about an inch thick and 4" length and height-wise. The features are ridiculously robust, but the WISP mode that acts as a firewall for public wifi is my #1 go to! In fact it's the only way I connect to any wireless network that isn't my own. The throughput speed are mind boggling 🤯 with WiFi 6 and the VPN support gives me great piece of mind. It never generates any heat and has been the perfect product for the entire 2 months I've had it! I haven't even begun to scratch the surface of what this little powerhouse is capable of, but I can't wait to snag a few more! Thank you ASUS for answering prayers I didn't even know I had!

Perfect travel router
I got this for a holiday so that it would be easier for my friends and I to connect to wifi and it is making my life so much easier!! Not only do we have to log in only once, we also get a VPN so we can watch our shows and use our services like we were at home. And for when I'm not on holiday it makes printing on the go that much easier!! Cause I can use it with my portable printer!! Highly recommend for the travelling kind!!
