Alloy, not plastic. The design is a definite anti-slip. I use them on a road bike and even pushing the pace, my feet did not slip. They arrived well packed and free of any damage. The design is wide enough.Now the tweak part.When I got them, I noticed the rotation of the pedal on the stem to be a bit restricted. It just seemed not lubricated enough with the stem nut a bit too tight. I disassembled the pedal and saw it has two bearing cassettes. With the bearings in place in the pedals, I saturated the bearings with lithium grease spray , turning them all the while. I reassembled the pedal and reset the adjusting nut (which has a plastic locking edge) just tight enough to be free turning but not loose.
