Brilliant and probably too honest for some…
Although not entirely what I expected it is a great book and a reasonable cost. Sure , you can find the scans online. Print them out. Etc. but it’s a historical book much like many others which contains a the originals of the original game. Yes, there are uncomfortable discussions about the early bias noted. Not to state the obvious, but everyone has their flaws and the desire to paint the creators as gods beyond reproach by some one star reviews is absurd. Sure there’s undertones (and maybe some overtones even) of bias, it doesn’t take away from the creation provided. They were fairly stereotypical gamers of the era and just acknowledging that doesn’t bother me… in contrast it makes them much more human. There is discussion of the creators’ conflict and even some of the interpersonal differences… and again it makes it seem even more on point they were a bunch of regular people at the helm of this trying to do something new Yes, it’s a lot of scans and reprints, but despite that it’s fun to page through and enjoy the nostalgia.

Must have D&D collection
A must have for any true D&D fan. It has a lot of information in it take really brings me back. Love all the old stuff like notes, adventures, and easter eggs that added. I purchased at a discounted price but definitely with what I paid for it. Looks great and well made. Large encyclopedic type book.

Great book for DnD lovers
Fantastic book. Great color and text. Very high quality printing. If you are a D&D fan, this has some neat stuff in it. My biggest complaint is that whoever sent this not packaging books very well, anymore. This was loose in a box with no padding, and one corner got a ding. It's not that big a deal, but I wish Amazon would do a better job of packaging it.

Perfect gift idea
Got this as a gift for my son. He was thrilled. It is so cool and full of history. It turned out to be a very thoughtful gift. He us a die hard DnD fan. This is a great book for anyone interested in the game, but especially those who are true afficianados.

Not a narrative history, but a compendium of source documents
There is almost no supporting text. A page or half page here and there before each major document reproduction. Has a lot of interesting historical documents you just could not find anywhere else. If you want a continuous readable history, this would be the wrong book. If you are interested in short overviews and original principal documents from which you can put the story together yourself like a researcher, then this is for you. And if you just want a thorough document of all of the original materials that became dungeons and dragons, this also is for you. I love it but I don't know if I'm going to read it through all the way. Maybe just a coffee table book that I skip through now and then.

This book is huge!
Been waiting ages for this book to be released and it arrived today right before I left for work. I opened it up as soon as I got home. First thoughts are it's huge and the paper thickness is far beyond what I'm used to. The contents are overflowing with not only the original books, but also early rules sets that never really made it out of the local community, tons of work-in-progress documents, letters back and forth, and other great content that I've never seen. Most of them have corrections and other comments written in them by the developers and playtesters. If you are interested in the early history, going back to the origins, then this is highly recommended. I just wish it went further forward, it stops right before the first box set. Hopefully there will be another volume. The art back then was just pure gritty fantasy, something I think the modern editions have moved to far away from. Simply beautiful!

Great historical tome
This book is a must for anyone that wants to learn more about the history of D&D. As a lower middle class minority kid, this game gave me an outlet for me and my friends to escape the world a few hours at a time. There’s a part in the intro where WOTC apologizes that the original content they republished isn’t inclusive but I honestly don’t know why that’s necessary. I don’t remember any aspect of the game that prevented your character from being black, yellow, red, brown, green, whatever. It was always your character, and you could write your background story anyway you wanted. Maybe in the early 80’s we were too busy having fun to realize that we were being marginalized? LOL While this book does include the original rules, I wouldn’t buy it if your main intent was to learn how to play D&D with it. You’d be much better off with one of the starter boxed sets, or playing online. The first copy of this book that I received was badly damaged. The book is heavy and the box had very little padding. As a result several corners were smashed on both the dust jacket and the book. I got lucky with my replacement copy.

Historical design dive
If you want a deep dive into the creative design process that led up to the creation of DnD you’re in for a treat. Original texts and notes are reproduced along with some commentaries. Personally I could have had more of the commentary and summary text. But if your interested in how the ROG materialised this is your book.

Great historical reference
Aside from the fact it has some "warnings" that personally i feel detract from the products full potential it is well put together and does a great job of showing how historically the game came together... If your interested in the history of Dungeon and Dragons and would like to see some of the personal notes of the people that brought it to life this is a great reference to have.

Sontuoso!
